Marketing a product can be a joy or a lot of work. If your product is really good, does what you say it does, the marketing is a joy. If you are trying to sell a product that the population doesn’t really want, the marketing is hard, thankless work. For Democrats, the vibe today is for hardscrabble stories while growing up. Kamala is rewriting history to fit this Brat marketing narrative.

If you saw the biography video that was shown at the Democrat National Convention, you think that Kamala Harris was born in Oakland and that she grew up with her sister as the child of a single mother. She worked at McDonald’s while she attended Howard University, an HBCU. She became an outstanding Prosecutor, then a Senator, and the Vice President tethering her to Joe Biden. Oops, forget about Joe. Kamala is a fresh, new face. Kamala is Brat.

If Morgan Freeman narrated each of our life stories, we would all sound impressive, just saying.

Would it harm the Brat Kamala brand to tell the truth. Kamala was born in Oakland because that’s where the hospital was. She lived in West Berkeley.

On a sunny day in January 2019, some 20,000 massed around Oakland City Hall, eagerly waiting to watch Kamala Harris announce her run for U.S. president.

“Oakland, are we proud that we are Kamala Harris’ hometown?” called out then-Mayor Libby Schaaf, introducing the candidate from the podium. Applause erupted. “She has got Oakland’s progressive values and a vision of inclusion.”

The celebration raised some eyebrows in Berkeley, the neighboring city where Harris actually lived and went to school as a child.

Harris was born at Kaiser hospital in Oakland but spent the beginning of her life in the smaller city to the north, where her parents met as graduate students and Civil Rights Movement activists. After a short stint in the Midwest, Harris returned to Berkeley for elementary school. She left again at age 12 for Montreal. She lived in Oakland later, as a young adult and prosecutor starting her career in the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office.

Nothing wrong with being a child of two University of California at Berkeley parents. It’s not average. When people think of a single mother, after her parents divorce, they think of someone working shifts at the parts plant. Shyamala Gopalan was a post-doctoral breast cancer researcher. In Montreal, Canada that is. Canada has been airbrushed from the Kamala Harris biography. I don’t know why? They also don’t ever talk about her living two years in Urbana, Illinois. Canada is more interesting. This is from a New York Times profile of Harris written four years ago:

Ms. Harris, who was born in 1964, has downplayed her time in Canada amid a racist misinformation campaign that she was not born American. She declined to comment for this article.

But in her memoir, “The Truths We Hold: An American Journey,” she described the culture shock of the move.

“I was 12 years old, and the thought of moving away from sunny California in February, in the middle of the school year, to a French-speaking foreign city covered in 12 feet of snow was distressing,” she wrote.

“My mother tried to make it sound like an adventure, taking us to buy our first down jackets and mittens, as though we were going to be explorers of the great northern winter,” she wrote. “But it was hard for me to see it that way.”

Her mother initially sent the sisters to a Francophone school. It was a tumultuous time in Quebec, with an ascendant nationalist party and culture wars over language.

“I used to joke that I felt like a duck, because all day long at our new school I’d be saying, ‘Quoi? Quoi? Quoi?’” — What? What? What? — Ms. Harris wrote in her memoir.

Quoi? Kamala Harris doesn’t speak French after going to a French speaking school for five years! Well, she can do a bad French accent.

Kamala Harris also did a year a Vanier College in Montreal before moving on to Howard U. Sounds like a pretty privileged upbringing to me. Which is why “fry girl” at Mickey D’s got added to the Brat Brand. Could it be a true story? Bonchie wrote in Red State today that that addition to the hardscrabble story may not be true:

According to Harris, she “did fries” before moving over to work as a cashier, and that’s just the first part of the tale that doesn’t necessarily add up. The behind-the-counter dynamic at McDonald’s doesn’t typically have a specific person only cooking fries. With that said, it’s at least possible she labored at a unique McDonald’s that had her only cooking fries before moving over to be a cashier.

What’s less believable is that this harrowing story of a working-class woman having to pay her way through college by salting fries was only worth mentioning when she began to run for president.

For decades, Harris never mentioned it, not on the campaign trail nor in two books. It’s absent from a job application and résumé she submitted a year after she graduated from college. Third-party biographers did not write about it. Not until Harris ran for president in 2019 and spoke to a labor rally in Las Vegas did she mention the job, telling the crowd that she “was a student when I was working in a McDonald’s.”

It would seem odd for Harris to never mention this detail about her life story until she was in her mid-50s. She wrote multiple books, and none of them included her working at McDonald’s. The multiple biographers who profiled her apparently never knew about it either. Only when it became politically convenient did Harris start making the claim.

Why do these people pad their resumes with sketchy hardscrabble stories? Can’t you be a child of divorce who grew up in a university atmosphere, went to a French speaking upper school and ended up at a great HBCU. Isn’t that a great story? Why embellish?

I can’t believe she doesn’t speak French! Wow!
