Bloomberg Diverts Resources for the New York Marathon While Thousands Still Suffer from Sandy Devastation
November 2, 2012
The situation in certain New York neighborhoods is terrible. After Hurricane Sandy struck, much of the city fell into darkness. Thousands are without power or gas. There is no public transportation, no cell power. Many don’t have clean water or food. Sewage has been shut off, and many high-rise buildings don’t have working elevators. New Yorkers are suffering, and there is a shocking lack of compassion from their mayor, Mike Bloomberg.
See, the New York Marathon is coming up this weekend. And rather than cancel the marathon, considering the shambles the city is currently in, Bloomberg has decided to continue on with it. Not only is the marathon going to happen, but Bloomberg is diverting resources away from the victims of Sandy for the marathon. Police, generators, food trucks… all items that could be used to relieve the suffering of Sandy victims, but instead, Bloomberg’s using them for runners in the marathon. Some are saying that generators have been sitting, unused, for the race at least a week.
Millions are without power in the northeast. Over 30 people have died in New York City alone. People’s homes are being looted. And Bloomberg is taking precious resources away from the people who desperately need it.
There’s been a growing backlash over Bloomberg’s leadership in the face of this disaster. Yesterday, Bloomberg was campaigning for Barack Obama. Two toddlers were found dead in Staten Island yesterday. Now he’s taking resources away from those who desperately need it, and for what? A marathon. A race.
Bloomberg should be ashamed.
