Benghazi and the Gowdy Committee

Benghazi and the Gowdy Committee

Speaker John Boehner announced on Monday that Trey Gowdy will head the Special Select Committee investigating the White House response to the 9.11.12 Benghazi Consulate terrorist attack.  In my humble opinion, Mr. Boehner couldn’t have chosen a more perfect person to lead these hearings.  I’ve watched Rep. Gowdy on C-Span effectively questioning others that have been brought before his committee.  His experience as a federal prosecutor will serve him well, as there are many to be questioned, and many questions to be asked. It is not just about an email.  The email just opened the door.

As I wrote about in an earlier article, the email exposed a cover-up of a cover-up.  When Congress requested documents and a redacted copy of said email was all that was sent.  Then the Judicial Watch FOIA request came through, and voila! the complete email!  Cover-up of a cover-up.  It is a blatantly deceitful action to ignore Congress.

Good for Judicial Watch.  This got the ball rolling in a direction that many have wanted it to roll for a very long time.

It is no secret that, on the surface, the lie about the video and making the President look good was all about the upcoming presidential election.  By hook or by crook, as they say.  But as I also pointed out in my earlier article, why not tell the truth: “we were caught unaware, there was a miscommunication, we’ve seen our mistake. We fixed it. Done.”  Could it be because it goes deeper?  Yes, much deeper.  This is why Trey Gowdy is perfect for the job.

From the earliest days after Benghazi and the video theory was being touted by the administration (and we were blinking twice as if to see if we were really hearing what we were hearing), other ideas were also being floated.  Ideas that seemed more feasible, but went nowhere with the administration as they pushed the video.  The theories included were kidnapping and trading Ambassador Stevens for the Blind Sheik,  Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman (the man who orchestrated the first World Trade Center bombing, who is in a high security prison here in the United States).  Another feasible theory that was floated and denied by the administration is arms dealing – that the government was funneling arms through Benghazi.

Some of you are saying, grab the tinfoil hat.  Okay, you look fetching.

There is a Citizens Commission on Benghazi, which is a self-selected group of top military officers, CIA operatives, and legal analysts.  Here is a list of their members and their credentials.  Here is some of what the report says:

Has the Obama administration switched sides in the War on Terror, providing arms and aid to militants linked to al Qa’eda? This conclusion was strongly hinted at during the Citizens’ Commission on Benghazi (CCB) conference held last September to uncover the truth behind the Benghazi, Libya attacks of 2012. “Here’s the sentence, here’s the headline, that the Obama administration does not want broadcast anywhere or printed anywhere: ‘Obama Administration Arms Al Qaeda,’” said Judicial Watch’s Chris Farrell at the time. Farrell’s words would prove prescient.

In its new Interim Report, the product of months of interviews with sources knowledgeable about what was happening in Libya, the CCB uncovers that, indeed, arms were going to al Qa’eda. “The U.S. facilitated the delivery of weapons and military support to al Qa’eda-linked rebels in Libya,” states one of the key findings of the report. The report also includes a summary of the 85 Freedom of Information Act requests submitted by Accuracy in Media (AIM) and the CCB.

Rep. Trey Gowdy and the special committee that will be put together by the end of this week has a tough job ahead of them.  The above captioned report came out in the last weeks of April.  Timing is everything.  This Gowdy Committee  isn’t just about an email.

There are rumbles amongst Democrats of boycotting these hearings, though Nancy Pelosi herself is saying that Democrats should participate (and is trying to make sure that Democrats will have an equal say).  I suppose the President could put it all he speculation to rest easily enough by complying fully with Congress right now and order the State Department to turn over all pertinent information.

I suppose pigs could take flying lessons, too.

    “all the speculation”

This administration had, at its inception in Jan 2009, so much goodwill coming from so many circles. Even some of the opposition, wanted to convey best wishes and had a let’s see attitude. I think that goodwill has been betrayed time and again.

Now, this by itself, is not sufficient reason to have a Special Select Committee. Rather, this administration has demonstrated an attitude of not being accountable to the people. It sees itself as only accountable to itself. There have been so many governmental abuses come to light that it’s difficult to comprehend.

Also, my impression is that such incidents as Beinghazi are just not willy-nilly ones. There are precipitating factors. The arms question and the Blind Shiek are two that have circulated from early on. Whatever the case might be, the people have a right to know. A right to know what sort of CIC the country has. A right to know about the role one played who is a would-be CIC. A right to know what policies are being pursued which are in the best interest of this country, as well as those that are not. If anybody can get to the bottom of this, I think that Trey Gowdy will do his very best. We need to keep him and the committee in our prayers in the days ahead.

It definitely wasn’t the Blind Sheik. And that’s easily provable.

I hate to do this, but in my opinion the Citizen’s Commission, however well meaning made a number of fairly big mistakes that are fairly easily refuted. And their use of questionable sources like NewsMax and WorldNetDaily only underline that.

What happened in Benghazi is so bad that not only would it have finished President Obama’s re-election off but we might even be talking about criminal indictments. That’s why the efforts to bury it have been so frenetic. The key is what Ambassador Stevens was doing in Benghazi in the first place.

You are right Rob, why was the Ambassador there, why were his requests for additional security denied. There are a lot of questions that need to be asked and answered. The point of my article was to show there are many questions to asked and, Trey Gowdy is the man for the job.
