The family of Freddie Gray has reached a tentative deal with the city of Baltimore in their wrongful death complaint against the city to the tune of $6.4 million dollars. And who released this nugget to the public? Why none other than the illustrious Baltimore mayor, Stephanie Rawlings-Blake. Yes, the same Stephanie Rawlings-Blake that said this during the violence that overtook the city following the death of Freddie Gray and the ensuing charges against six Baltimore police officers:
More, from Fox News:
The family of Freddie Gray, who died after being critically injured in police custody, reached a tentative $6.4 million wrongful death settlement with the city of Baltimore, resolving civil claims about a week after the first hearing in the criminal case against six police officers, officials said Tuesday…
The settlement still needs the approval of a board that oversees city spending. That board meets Wednesday.
“The proposed settlement agreement going before the board of estimates should not be interpreted as a judgment on the guilt or innocence of the officers facing trial,” Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake said in a news release. “This settlement is being proposed solely because it is in the best interest of the city, and avoids costly and protracted litigation that would only make it more difficult for our city to heal and potentially cost taxpayers many millions more in damages.”
The settlement does not resolve any factual disputes, and expressly does not constitute an admission of liability on the part of the city, its police department or any of the officers. The settlement has nothing whatsoever to do with the criminal proceedings, the press release said.
Meanwhile, the lives of these six officers hang in the balance, and in the cross-hairs of perpetually biased State Attorney, Marilyn Mosby, who just last week was admonished by the judge in the case for her unprofessional behavior, starting with her activist rhetoric on the steps of the Baltimore War Memorial when she giddily announced charges against the six officers.
My two cents? Methinks this settlement is a bone you’re throwing to the family, and to the community, Mayor Rawlings-Blake, in an effort to clear your own conscience of the irresponsible words you uttered to a tinderbox of a city on the brink of exploding. But I’ve got news for you: Awarding $6.4 million dollars to a family whose son was a known perennial litigant will not relieve you of your own culpability in both the out-of-control rioting you oversaw, and the state of Baltimore today under your watch. What the city really needs is new leadership, starting with you and your incompetent State Attorney. Until then, this is little more than, once again, kowtowing to threats of violence, in my oh-so-humble opinion. Expect litigants to crawl out of the woodwork now. And you’ll have only yourself to blame.
If I still owned property in the city, I’d be furious about this. I work in the city and many of my co-workers own property there. I wonder how they feel about this. Wasn’t having public officials who reflect the make-up of the city supposed to improve things in the city?
Good question, Joe. And I don’t believe a civil suit was even formally filed yet. I’d call that blackmail. And a massive message to potential jurists that the six officers are probably guilty. The mayor and her state attorney should be recalled, imo.
