Fresh off of Michelle Obama’s whirlwind trip to Spain, the Obamas are fleeing to another vacation spot. While Obama promised to vacation in the Gulf to prove things were better, he ended up spending less than 48 hours there — and he didn’t actually swim in the Gulf either, as promised. Fresh off the news that jobless claims have jumped again, the Obamas are fleeing to Martha’s Vineyard today. You know, always best to keep a low profile by going on an inexpensive, discount vacation spot like Cape Cod!
A year ago, less than one year into his presidency, Barack Obama came to Martha’s Vineyard for a summer vacation that was all about relaxing with his family, enjoying the best the island had to offer.
And the mood last year, among both residents and visitors, was also generally upbeat and welcoming.
… Today, as the president and his family return to the Vineyard for a two-week vacation, Obama’s approval ratings are considerably lower. While bike rides, the beach, golf and long walks may again be on the agenda, the mood on the island, and in the country, has shifted from a wary optimism to the realization that the road ahead is long, hard and more difficult than it seemed last year.
And the residents of Martha’s Vineyard are welcoming him with open arms.
Meanwhile, Americans are continuing to suffer. I wonder how many Americans can afford to go jet-setting like the Obamas — Spain! Florida! Cape Cod! — in between golf games and star-studded fundraisers.
While of course the president deserves a vacation occasionally, this is borderline ridiculous. All this president does is go on vacations, go golfing, and hang out with athletes and celebrities. He rarely does any actual governing. He loves the perks of the job, but he doesn’t want to actually do the job. Being the president is undoubtedly a stressful job, but it also requires actual governing. Obviously the campaigner-in-chief can’t understand that.
I kinda agree with the sign – I think that Obama should extend his vacation till January 2012. Things could not possibly get worse with him on “vacation” than present in Washington.
best “accomplishment” on the list: Won a Nobel Peace Prize…that took alot of work! And of course, the Global Image recast from a ‘swaggering cowboy” to a huge WIMP isn’t necessarily a good thing eh?
Marrha’s Vineyard just went off my “want to visit list”! Obama is a
Hugh Jass mistake!!!
The more time he vacations, the less time he has to govern. Why is anyone complaining about this?
I bet it would cost the country a lot less to just give him a non-stop vacation at Martha’s Vinyard than it would to let him keep spending our money. Any chance we could send Pelosi and Reid there until we can note them out of office? At least it would keep them out of trouble.
As a woman who has spent over a quarter-century in New England, and who does love the Vineyard, I want to know why Obama feels the need to go there twice. Yes, once – because it’s a great spot and everyone should go once – but it’s the type of place that’s crawling with people who have been going since they were kids, and then take their kids and their grandkids there. A beach in Florida it is not.
And as for cost? Second only to Nantucket in the area… for heaven’s sake, if you need to play New Englander, there are loads of places on Cape Cod itself to do that, at a fraction of the price. Maybe the problem is that it’s also at a fraction of the glamour.
Yep, signing bills, nominating judges, and accepting prizes is tough work. I mean, he had to do all that writing and talking and flying and stuff.
Oh, and all that commanding of war zones. My Hero, Zero!
Everyone in my office has to “use or lose” leave before the end of the year. We’re so busy, our company is allowing us to sell leave back. What does that tell you about our priorities concerning work and vacation? And I haven’t even nominated any justices or picked up my Nobel Prize yet this year!
Roxanne, Obama is probably going to the Vineyard because it’s FREE. Some wealthy, influential Democrats own some property up there, you know? His $400,000 a year salary doesn’t stretch as far as you’d think with two kids in private school and a wife who needs to go to Spain and New York all the time. He has to make ends meet just like the rest of us.
