Clay Travis threw down the gauntlet with a $10 million challenge. His proposal? Put the defending WNBA champion Las Vegas Aces on the court against a high school boys state championship basketball team. If the Aces win, they take home the money. If the boys win, they get the prize.
Predictably, people immediately picked sides. Some hailed Travis as a hero exposing the obvious reality of biology. Others called him a sexist, making a mockery of women’s sports. But after watching this unfold for a few days, I keep coming back to one question: Is this really the conversation women’s sports need?

It’s funny. For someone who doesn’t watch much basketball on television, I’ve sure spent a lot of time writing about it lately. But that’s because this really isn’t about basketball. It’s about whether we can have an honest conversation about women’s sports without turning it into either an ideological crusade or a viral publicity stunt.
Here’s where I part ways with Clay Travis. It isn’t because I think he’s wrong about biology. I don’t. It’s because I think he’s chosen the wrong way to make his point.
The more I’ve thought about it, the more I keep asking myself why this debate needs one more grand demonstration. We’ve been having this conversation for years. We’ve seen similar exhibition matches in other sports. We already know why women’s leagues exist. So what exactly is this game supposed to prove?
But then I remember the $10 million going to the winner. So there’s that.
Here’s the problem. Clay Travis isn’t wrong about the biological differences between men and women. I think regular, sane people know this truth.
But I also don’t think turning women’s basketball into a manufactured spectacle is the best way to defend that principle.
We’ve already watched this debate play out in other sports. The U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team lost a training match to FC Dallas’ Under-15 boys academy team. Australia’s women’s national team suffered a similar fate against an Under-15 boys squad. Those matches weren’t staged to humiliate women. They simply illustrated what most people already understood: men’s and women’s sports exist separately for a reason.
Which brings me back to Clay Travis. I don’t think his challenge settles anything.
If the boys win, supporters of Clay Travis will say it proves biological differences matter in sports. And it’ll create a new group of millionaire teenagers. Heh.
If the Aces somehow pull off the upset, which is obviously doubtful, supporters of the WNBA will claim victory.
And if the game never happens, everyone will keep yelling at each other on X.
Just when I thought the conversation couldn’t get any stranger, Clay Travis unveiled another proposal during his show with Buck Sexton.
He said he’s “100% serious” about buying a WNBA expansion franchise in Nashville. His plan? Fill the roster entirely with biological men who identify as women. He even said he’d name the team the “Nashville Balls.” Come on now! I don’t know if I should laugh out loud or roll my eyes.
I understand exactly what he’s trying to do. He’s trying to expose what he sees as the logical end of the WNBA’s own position. If biological men belong in women’s basketball simply because they identify as women, then why wouldn’t an entire team qualify?
It’s a fair question. But it’s also another spectacle.
Instead of keeping the focus on protecting women’s sports, the conversation shifts to hypothetical expansion teams, viral headlines, and who “owned” whom on social media. I can’t help thinking Clay Travis has a stronger argument than the stunts he’s using to make it.

The WNBA has earned plenty of criticism for embracing an ideology that undermines the very reason women’s sports exist. If league officials, coaches, and players continue insisting biological men belong in women’s leagues, they shouldn’t be surprised when people start challenging that belief.
But I also don’t think the answer is turning women’s basketball into a media stunt or dreaming up an all-trans expansion team.
Women’s sports deserve better than both.
They deserve people willing to defend the truth without turning female athletes into props for the next viral moment. Because once the spectacle becomes the story, the women who spent decades building these leagues get pushed into the background all over again.
Now, hopefully, this is my last basketball or sports-related post for a while. Somehow, I doubt it.

Reedbender says: Okay, we “transphobics” have already tried to have a rationale conversation about “men” in women’s’ sports. And yet we get WNBA coaches, coaches no less, insisting men belong in their sport. We do wish such conversations would lead to sanity but, alas …. At least Clay has a plan. What is your better plan other than bemoan the spectacle that the WNBA, and all women’s sports has become with their insistence on ignoring biology. Your plan?
Carol Marks says: Well then, I guess I’ve lost. Go ahead and let the men play and erase women sports.
Carol Marks says: Do they really have to be labeled “trans”? Just call it what it is: a team of men. Don’t use the word trans, because they’re men. I actually think that would make a bigger impact. Maybe I’m wrong, but it feels like calling them a “trans team” subtly accepts the premise that they’re a separate category that belongs in the discussion. To me, it comes across as saying, “Sure, let’s let trans people play,” instead of simply acknowledging they’re men.
SkillyBoo says: WNBA just wants any attention it can get since the Caitlyn affect has worn off and the Black players aren’t filling the arenas. It wouldn’t surprise me if the WNBA takes up one or both of these offers. A couple suggestions, lower the rim to 9 feet so dunks can be commonplace and get real referees to officiate instead of the clowns they have now.
Sigh. The Left does not care in the least for logic and reason. They do care at least somewhat for mockery and humiliation. The other thing that affects them is deadly violence – would you prefer that be used over what Clay is doing?
Carol Marks says: Well of course not.
Bob says: The whole point of the Travis challenges is to put the WNBA coach hypocrisy front and center. They will not take either challenge. (BUT, if a WNBA team wanted to up their game, they would scrimmage high school boys’ teams: the women would be forced to execute much more rapidly and under greater pressure.)
On YouTube you can watch women’s/girl’s soccer teams play against younger men/boys. The results are predictable, not because of a difference in skill level, but because boys/men can execute faster on average, and win 50-50 challenges 80% of the time.
The Trans arguments always come down to feelings and political bias, and never logic. The alphabet activists refuse to acknowledge the contradictions in their movement: LGB is obviously binary.
Carol Marks says: I don’t need Clay’s stunts to bring the hypocrisy front and center. It was already there. And I did bring up the women’s soccer matches against boys and how they got trampled by the boys. Clay’s offer might grab headlines for a weekend, but it won’t change who writes the rules. If we want lasting change, we need common-sense leaders in the positions where those decisions are actually made.
You have identified the problem.
You have identified what would solve the problem.
What you have NOT done is identify any plausible HOW.
Violence is a HOW that would almost definitely lead to the solution. But, correct, that is NOT a HOW that we want to see used.
Mockery and humiliation MIGHT be a peaceful HOW that would lead to the solution. People do not want to associate with a laughingstock. Funds may dry up. The NBA may dissolve the association with their brand. Sanity may be forced upon the team owners – or they may go bankrupt, selling their franchise to sane people.
