A Democratic Partisan Chosen to Investigate Partisan Power Abuse

Next press conference he holds I almost expect Obama to wear sunglasses and a baseball hat, look down and give a blanket “I’m sorry” for what seems like an endless stream of really stupid yet tremendously significant mistakes that have been made in the last year. The troubled roll-out of the Obamacare, by itself, accounting for a large number of them.

And they just keep coming.

Back in May the IRS’s internal auditor revealed that the agency had been targeting and blocking applications for tex-exempt status from conservative groups- particularly tea party groups. In response, Obama promised that the FBI and Justice Department would investigate the legality of the IRS’s actions. These investigations resulted in virtually no public results or reconciliation.

Here’s where the sunglasses and baseball hat come in.

Apparently the Justice Department selected a avowed political supporter of President Obama to lead the criminal probe, leading Republicans to claim the illegitimacy of the entire investigation.

House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell E. Issa, California Republican, and regulatory affairs subcommittee Chairman Jim Jordan, Ohio Republican, say they have uncovered that the leader of the investigation is Barbara Kay Bosserman, a  lawyer in the Justice Department who donated more than $6,000 to Mr. Obama’s 2008 and 2012 campaigns. Not only that, Bosserman made 12 different donations to the Obama campaign throughout its duration, one to the Obama Victory Fund and two to the National Democratic Committee.

The Washington Times reported Issa and Jordan’s concerns:

“The department has created a startling conflict of interest,” Mr. Issa and Mr. Jordan said in a letter sent Wednesday and reviewed by The Washington Times. “It is unbelievable that the department would choose such an individual to examine the federal government’s systematic targeting and harassment of organizations opposed to the president’s policies.”

You can read their letter here.

Now I understand one’s constitutional right to her own beliefs probably better than Obama does. But, really? This is a clearly partisan criminal investigation. Was there really no suitable leader that didn’t actively support a political cause? Apparently not since we ended up with a devoted political partisan  investigating a paramount example of partisan power abuse.

So Bosserman had donated to the exact type of democratic organizations that had received the IRS tax exemption that was sought after and denied to Tea Party and other conservative groups on the basis of them being too partisan.

While it was incredibly unfair to begin with that Obama for America only had to change it’s name to Organizing for Action to receive the exemption from the IRS while Tea Party groups were clearly too partisan, it is drastically unfair and irresponsible for a partisan advocate to be leading this investigation.

This choice was yet another simply poor one that had profound implications for an entire issue and, in this case, a criminal investigation into a government organization.
