Retreat became necessary after our Marines showed up to defend American civilians and diplomats at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad.
“The siege by supporters of an Iranian-backed militia at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad appeared to have ended Wednesday, after the militia ordered them to withdraw, bringing relief to the diplomats trapped inside and averting a potential showdown between the United States and Iran.
Supporters of the Kataib Hezbollah militia who had spent the night camped outside the embassy dismantled their tents and marched out of the area, saying they would instead continue to press for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq in the nation’s parliament.
Their retreat signaled an end to a crisis that had seen thousands of angry militia supporters attempt to storm the embassy on Tuesday in protest at the deaths of 25 militia members in U.S. airstrikes on Sunday. The strikes were in turn conducted in retaliation for the death of a U.S. contractor in a rocket attack which the U.S. military blamed on Kataib Hezbollah.”
No sooner had the news of the siege became known around the world, media and pundits along with tons of Obama-era holdovers (Ben Rhodes) desperately tried the ‘this will be Trump’s Benghazi!’ They just KNEW that this would be THE moment that would finally crater the Trump Administration.
Here’s the problem with this. Benghazi, which happened under Obama’s watch with Hillary (I’m stupendously thankful she is NOT our President) Clinton as Sec of State, happened because our military was told to stand down. Requested support was DENIED by the Obama Administration and Hillary Clinton. Ambassador Chris Stevens, Tyrone Woods, Glenn Doherty and Sean Smith were killed because the Administration left them to twist in the wind.
Don’t forget either that Hillary immediately tried the ‘it was a video that caused Benghazi’ narrative. Come to find out, the video had no bearing on the Benghazi attack and the loss of American lives there. Yet Hillary ran with that. And then, months later, when pressed as to WHY support and military reinforcement was not given to Ambassador Stevens… “What difference does it make?” was her excuse.
Yet all day yesterday the narrative was Trump! Benghazi! He’s toast!

Several in the media tried to claim that Trump only deployed our Marines because he desperately wanted to avoid another Benghazi controversy. Yes, that was the idiots over at Politico who claimed that.
VoteVets decided it would be a good time to root against our troops.
Don’t worry, you human dumpster fires, I’ve saved this for when you inevitably realize the optics of this tweet and delete it. pic.twitter.com/RIKq1JmMK6

I wonder why they deleted their tweet?
By golly, when they start a narrative, the left digs fast and furiously to keep it going even as rakes keep smacking them in the face.

This morning the news media was STILL trying to gin up concern and worry about how Trump was handling this crisis.
And then, suddenly… RETREAT!
The Kataib Hezbollah militants were ordered multiple times by the Iraqi government and officials in their own organization to leave. Likely those officials saw the writing on the wall and knew that militants going up against our Marines would end badly… for the Hezbollah.
I do have to laugh at the fact that while in retreat, the Hezbollah was declaring victory.
If victory means the victor is the one in retreat…you are doing it wrong.
Somehow, someway there will be scolds trying to figure out how the militants retreating is a bad thing for Trump. If I were the left, I wouldn’t take my cues from the Babylon Bee, unless they want more of their narrative skewered.
What happened at our embassy in Baghdad wasn’t because twenty five terrorists were obliterated by our military. No, this is something that has been brewing for quite some time and encouraged by their handlers in Iran.
The left wanted Trump to fail at this and truly hoped the ‘Trump Benghazi’ narrative would become fact and successfully eclipse Hillary’s failures.
Iranian-backed militants retreating and American lives saved is now the left’s Benghazi that wasn’t.

Events like this are exactly why we never should have gotten rid of napalm.
Everyone inside the walls of the embassy compound were participating in an act of war.
An AC-130 can pretty much duplicate the same effect on large crowds of people.
Similar, but not the same. Napalm is not penetrative, so is a little easier to use when “in contact” but inside a building. Punching 25mm and 105mm cannon fire into the area immediately surrounding the embassy building could have undesired structural impacts. Collateral effects from napalm would be minimal, imo.
It’s sad, but to be expected, that some people on the Left were really hoping that Americans would be captured, tortured, and killed just to make the President look bad.
Nobody on the Right wanted Benghazi, and probably would have given respect to Obama and Hillary had they rushed Marines to save our embassy and more importantly our men.
Joe, that’s because one of the groups you mention, in general at least, want only the best for America, while the other group you mention seeks to utterly destroy, and rule over it.. I’ll leave it to you to decided which is which. As to the AC-130 and the napalm, I agree that both are very useful, and should be employed against such scum as often as needed.
…Trump’s Benghazi unfolds in Iraq…
Joy Reid is right. This was Trump’s Benghazi. He was tested and found strong and worthy.
Obama and Hillary were tested and found wanting.
[…] while the Iraqi government stood aside. Faced with stiff opposition and U.S. rapid response, the “mourners” ultimately left the compound, having inflicted only property damage, though they did leave a calling […]
