A quote: “Not knowing when the dawn will come, I open every door.” ― Emily Dickinson
I’ll start with a story …
********************************
The itch woke me but when I reached to scratch I couldn’t move.
Confused, I opened my eyes to a strange room. Stan was there wearing a sheepish smile.
Hospital. Ooooo-kay. Casts, tubing, beeping machines. Not okay.
I glared,“Some guardian angel you are!”
He shrugged; fluttering wings sent the tubes swaying. “I can’t prevent all things or even most. I divert. Dude, you survived.”
“Like this?”
“When the door shuts, I always open a window.”
I opened my mouth to tell him where he could put that window when the nurse arrived, turning to me with a smile.
Yowzer.
********************************
Now, it’s your turn.

Leanthrel turned from his workbench, his snowy wings brushing against a destiny globe as he did.
“It’s the temptation, isn’t it… for these younglings to pass across the portal to test themselves in the land of man.”
Throesus looked back, golden sparks swimming in his amber eyes. “It will be all right, surely. He’s just barely gone – not even a full day. What harm can come in just one day?”
Leanthrel laid his hammer on the workbench. “You’ve never been to the land of men.” Then he lowered his voice. “They are in the rebellion there against the everlasting. They use his name as a curse word.”
“NO!” Throesus moaned. “After what he did for them?”
Leanthrel turned back to his work.
Behind him, Throesus murmured, “He’ll be all right, surely. It hasn’t even been one day.”
“Good morning, Mr. Smith.”
“Good morning, Robert.”
Smith exits, I release the door. I love my people. They are grateful for my service. Each December I receive the usual Christmas/Channukah/Kwanzaa/”Happy Holidays” cards with nice cash gifts. I enjoy letting them out.
That’s not what excites me. It’s the letting in, strangers, the unknown.
Someone appears I don’t recognize. I open, letting the world in. Magical. I scrutinize each face for evil, but it’s rare. “Welcome.”
The universe promises something, I don’t know what… love, adventure, career, friend, wisdom, religion… opportunity… if I notice. I’m the doorman. I open the door.
