You have to feel a little sorry for the man. He has entered a new reality. He has entered a reality where his 26 year old son has murdered nine people. Nine classmates. His son took weapons to school and shot fellow classmates for being Christians.
Ian Mercer, father of the Umpqua killer, was interviewed on CNN and stated quite firmly that guns are responsible for the murders.
“They talk about gun laws, they talk about gun control. Every time something like this happens they talk about it and nothing is done,” said Ian Mercer.
“Look all over the world, you don’t see these kind of mass shootings all over the world on a consistent basis like you do in the United States,” he added.
According to an article on Breitbart, the killer’s mother is black and his father is white, but when he “came into the world, his birth father was not in the picture.” The killer graduated from the Switzer Learning Center, which specializes in troubled children. From the Switzer website:
While emotional issues may begin as a result of neglect, abuse, or a family history of illness, they often grow deeper as a child unsuccessfully struggles in schools ill-equipped to meet his or her specific needs because of untreated learning difficulties.
So, the killer came from a broken home. Graduated from a school for troubled children and left a note that “lamented the fact that he did not have a girlfriend. “He said he had no life,” another official said, adding: “He felt the world was against him.”
I am very sorry Ian Mercer, but you were put on notice, as were so many of these killers’ families, that you needed to take decisive action regarding your child.
Now, you want to blame the guns.
Let’s talk about responsible parenting and mental illness. Shall we?
Wow! Ummm .. he sees an opportunity to make good on being a daddy… NOT!
Daddy, if a well meaning shooter had been on premises that day… perhaps I may not have taken so many lives. Thank Allah they didn’t have that.
People, please, please understand. Those that want to acquire weapons WILL. Legally or not!!! And those who are legal law abiding citizens need NOT be held accountable for this!!! WOW had someone been there with a gun? Sorry your son would have been ended before many of the others were….
Although I have read that the murderer lived with his mother, and not his father, the fact remains that as a 20-year old, he could not legally buy a handgun for himself. The BATFE reported that all guns used were purchased legally, and some were handguns. While you can purchase long guns at 18, you must be 21 to buy a handgun. Wonder who bought the handguns for him? Mother? Father? Someone else?
Wasn’t the shooter 26? “He has entered a reality where his 26 year old son has murdered nine people.”
He was 26, not 20.

“Guns Killed in Oregon Not Shooter Per Dad.”
What a horribly written headline. Here, I’ve fixed that.
“Father of Oregon shooter states that guns killed victims, not his son.”
