Happy Thanksgiving. We say it without thinking about it, often. No matter what is going on, we truly do have many reasons to be thankful on this Thanksgiving Day. Let’s look at just five.
1. Plentiful Food – Are there people who go hungry in the U.S.A.? Yes. We sure try hard to make sure that everyone gets fed. According to World Hunger, one in nine people on the globe go hungry. Not feeling hungry, but malnutrition.
My late mother-in-law once accused me of feeding my husband an “old, cold baloney sandwich” for dinner. Whether you are having a traditional Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings or an “old, cold” bologna sandwich from a paper sack, please be thankful.
2. Literacy – You can read. Hale, yeah. Reading is one of the best things in life. Whether you are reading from your android, Kindle, laptop, or a book, you can educate, entertain or calm your mind. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, in 1870, 20% of the population, aged 14 and older, could not read or write in any language. The Washington Post reported that the U.S.A. is the 7th most literate country on the planet. We are behind Finland, Norway and Iceland and a few other places, but we are 7th out of the 61 countries for which there are statistics.
Being able to read is truly a reason for thanksgiving.
3. The beauty of Our Nation – Every morning I wake up and the view of the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains is different. Ever changing beauty.
Beauty is every where you look.
The beauty is everywhere and for that we should be thankful.
4. You are living now. – Life used to totally suck. You think Obamacare is bad. You hate your insurance company. Bah. Well, alright Obamacare is really, really awful.
In 1651, Thomas Hobbes wrote the phrase “solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short” to describe the life of man in a natural state. He was at war with every other man for every resource, food, water and shelter.
Be thankful that you are only unfriending people on Facebook over politics.
5. Music – Can you imagine life without music? I have known deaf people who felt the music through their feet. The rhythm of music can make you happy, angry, sad or any other emotion known to humankind. Speaking of music, check out one of my favorite hymns.
Wow. I am thankful for that music.
Happy Thanksgiving and every blessing to you and yours on this beautiful day.
I’m thankful for parents who nurture and love their children. What can be more important than the well-being of a child? After all, there is but one, and only one, opportunity to provide a solid foundation on which to build throughout life.
Yes, it’s possible that, if this isn’t provided, a life may be salvaged. However, the longer any attempts to do so are delayed the more such efforts amount to “damage control.”
Frederick Douglass (bio here: http://www.biography.com/people/frederick-douglass-9278324) is to have said, “It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken [ones].”
So, my prayers of thanksgiving are for such loving parents who seek, despite those hair-pulling moments, to give their children the best start in life that they can. As well, for those who assist parents who are having difficulties in fulfilling their parental responsibilities. And, prayers for those who assist individuals deprived as children and now as adults struggling in seeming futility along life’s way.
Blessings to all this Thanksgiving Day!
May you and your families have a blessed Thanksgiving!
