Veterans Day – Is Important, Don’t Change It.

Veterans Day – Is Important, Don’t Change It.

Veterans Day – Is Important, Don’t Change It.

I can’t even pretend like this is a good idea. Ugh. President Donald Trump wants to rename Veterans Day, November 11 to Victory for World War I. He wants to recognize a new holiday on May 8 to Victory in World War II Day. We think these changes are colossally bad ideas. We think if Trump polled these ideas he would find that the public is 80/20 against splitting up the date.

President Trump is 100% wrong and the public would be right. Here is what Trump said from the Washington Examiner:

President Donald Trump announced on Thursday night that he is renaming Veterans Day to “Victory Day for World War I” and renaming May 8, known as V-E Day, as “Victory Day for World War II.”

Trump did not issue an executive order immediately following the announcement, though he could do so later on Friday.

Y’all know that I am a rabid Trumpette! Four square behind him. He does occasionally need a mute button. He comes up with fine ideas when he is spit balling, but this is not one. Trump further mused:

“Many of our allies and friends are celebrating May 8th as Victory Day, but we did more than any other Country, by far, in producing a victorious result on World War II,” he said. “I am hereby renaming May 8th as Victory Day for World War II and November 11th as Victory Day for World War I. We won both Wars, nobody was close to us in terms of strength, bravery, or military brilliance, but we never celebrate anything — That’s because we don’t have leaders anymore, that know how to do so! We are going to start celebrating our victories again!”

I don’t think we need our beautiful children in school for any more hours than they already are. During the hours they are there, we have to remember how the teachers are failing them when it comes to reading, writing and history. I am not blaming the teachers. The teachers have regulations and compliance to deal with in addition to indoctrination. It’s easier in the younger years to sit the children along the curbs of our metropolitan and suburban areas and explain that we are honoring all of the veterans, who have bravely gone to protect us and are freedoms, as those veterans march by.

Plus, adults have enough trouble delineating Memorial Day and Veterans Day:

The federal holidays of Veterans Day and Memorial Day are both designed to celebrate members of the U.S. military, but there are a few key differences. Memorial Day, which took shape after the Civil War, is considered a day to honor those who were killed in or as a result of participating in battle. Veterans Day, which materialized at the end of World War I, is a day to honor all service men and women, but especially those who remain with us to share their experiences.

We should honor all veterans, whether they were in theater or not. Only one in ten of our military personnel actually sees combat. I am surprised that it really has not changed with the asymmetrical wars we fight now, but it hasn’t. I like the idea of celebrating the bravery and heroics of all of our personnel at one time. The coffee making rear echelon types and the (non-derogatory meaning) fobbits. They signed the check for up to and including their lives and they have earned a parade. The Veterans Day Parade that stops for prayer and reflection on the 11th month, the 11th day and the 11th hour should be big and bada$$.

It should not be watered down. The veterans in my life, my late Marine father (Korea), my son and my nephews (GWOT), have not been in winning wars. That had nothing to do with their bravery or willingness to fight. That solely should be laid at the doors of the civilian leadership and the flag officers.

You know it takes money to have holidays and parades. As we go into Trump’s Golden Age, we may be getting more money in our pockets, but our cities and town should be in an austerity program. In the case of Knox County, Tennessee, downtown Knoxville does the Veterans Day Parade and Farragut does the Fourth of July Parade. The shopping area near me (Rocky Hill) does the Christmas Parade, not too much for any town budget.

On the other hand, I could get behind the idea of a big parade on June 14. Here is the outline from The Independent:

President Donald Trump’s 79th birthday on June 14 could be celebrated with a massive military parade in Washington, D.C., according to newly-emerged planning documents.

The White House has previously denied that any such event was in development but the documents – dating from April 28 and 29, seen by the Associated Press (AP) but not yet made public – outline a spectacular occasion to mark the commander-in-chief’s birthday, which happens to fall on the same date as the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army.

Not for nothing, but June 14 is also Flag Day and we do have a magnificent flag. Plus, June 14 could be the commencement of celebration for the 250th anniversary of the Founding of our Republic on the Fourth of July, 1776. A whole year of celebrations that could have as its finally another fireworks display July 4, 2026 at Mount Rushmore. That was awesome last time.

Net, net: Leave Veterans Day the eff alone. For this year, Trump can add in Flag Day/Happy Birthday, Army/Happy Birthday, Trump and next year, I would like a big celebration at Mount Rushmore.

Thank you.

Yeah…this is a dumb idea. And I’m someone who has had his share of those so I speak from experience.

I agree whole hearedly(sp), keep it VE day and Veterans Day. I’m surprise he didn’t say anything about VJ day Aug 14th.

    Leave them alone.

Not that the people coming out of school nowadays know anything about them.

    • Well, now, if he made VJ day a public holiday – my wife would actually be in the mood most years to go to dinner for our anniversary. (We’ve been shifting to the previous or following weekend most years.)

Yeah, I’ll add my dislike of the notion. But – June 14th would be a good day for a “Services Day” – honoring all of those who sacrifice, either in the past, or currently in service.

    I’m fine with it.

Being a veteran, I appreciate Veterans Day. However, it’s never been why I put on the uniform and it was never some incentive for taking it off.

I’d be perfectly ok with moving Veterans Day to a different date, or even giving it up entirely, if we were to go back to making Armistice Day about the brave men who actually fought in WWI.

The same with both VE and VJ Day. I’d love to see it go further than what Mr. Trump is proposing.

For generic veterans, well, every branch has a birthday. Most soldiers and sailors can’t name theirs – maybe they should take a page out of the USMC playbook (said as a retired army E-8).

Thank you for your career service Top.
I agree, if you feel the need to change Veterans’ Day change it BACK to Armistice Day.

Good luck finding one that we didn’t set on fire or draw a bunch of dicks on.
