UN Ceasefire Resolution On Israel Vetoed By United States

The UN has been overwhelmingly useless for decades when it comes to Israel and the problems of the West Bank and Gaza.

You don’t need to look further than the absolute shitshow that the UNRWA has become to realize that. The “United Nations Relief And Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East” is the only UN agency completely dedicated to ONE group of people. And somehow, they haven’t helped much. In fact, one of the released Israeli hostages says that he was held captive in the home of a UNRWA teacher. This led to the UNRWA posting on Twitter/X about “misinformation” – and they promptly got slammed by Community Notes.

We have seen for years just how biased the UN has become against Israel. The highly ineffective and wishy-washy UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, decided that he should Do Something™ about the Israel-Hamas war. Did he tell Hamas to lay down their arms and surrender for the good of the civilians? Nope. Did he tell Israel to stop attacking a terrorist group that is still holding its citizens hostage? DING DING DING. Guterres invoked Article 99 of the UN Charter in an attempt to get a “humanitarian ceasefire” in Gaza.

So, what is Article 99? It’s a clause that allows the UN Secretary-General to immediately bring an issue forward to the Security Council.

Guterres invoked Article 99 of the U.N. Charter — last used over half a century ago — which says the secretary-general may inform the council of matters he believes threaten international peace and security.

Article 99 is extremely rarely used. The last time it was invoked was during fighting in 1971 that led to the creation of Bangladesh and its separation from Pakistan.

Guterres invoked Article 99 because he sees the situation in Gaza at risk of a “complete collapse” of the territory’s humanitarian system and civil order. It was something he felt needed to be done.

You know what would STOP the “complete collapse” of Gaza? Hamas surrendering. But no, Guterres wants the IDF to stop attacking, and for the UNRWA to get back to their job of constantly enabling Hamas.

The vote on the ceasefire went before the Security Council on Friday afternoon. There are 15 votes on the Security Council, with the five permanent members being the United States, the United Kingdom, France, China, and Russia. The final vote? Thirteen to one, with one abstention.

The United States vetoed a United Nations resolution Friday backed by almost all other Security Council members and dozens of other nations demanding an immediate humanitarian cease-fire in Gaza. Supporters called it a terrible day and warned of more civilian deaths and destruction as the war goes into its third month.

The vote in the 15-member council was 13-1, with the United Kingdom abstaining. The United States’ isolated stand reflected a growing fracture between Washington and some of its closest allies over Israel’s monthslong bombardment of Gaza. France and Japan were among those supporting the call for a cease-fire.

It seems that only the United States is willing to let Israel wipe out Hamas. Everyone else is apparently very concerned about coddling their favorite pet terrorists. How much money has been dumped into Gaza over the decades, only for this to be the end result? Innocent Israelis are raped and murdered in their own beds, and the UN was silent. Hamas hides itself behind civilians, and now the UN is Very Upset™. Giving credit where it is due, the Biden administration was willing to use the United States’ veto power to end the resolution.

U.S. deputy ambassador Robert Wood called the resolution “imbalanced” and criticized the council after the vote for its failure to condemn Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on Israel in which the militants killed about 1,200 people, mostly civilians, or to acknowledge Israel’s right to defend itself. He declared that halting military action would allow Hamas to continue to rule Gaza and “only plant the seeds for the next war.”

“Hamas has no desire to see a durable peace, to see a two-state solution,” Wood said before the vote. “For that reason, while the United States strongly supports a durable peace, in which both Israelis and Palestinians can live in peace and security, we do not support calls for an immediate cease-fire.”

Deputy Ambassador Wood is correct. There will be no peace as long as Hamas is in charge of the Gaza Strip. It will take a full “de-nazification” of the current population in order to get to a point where peace can be negotiated, and right now, there is no Palestinian leader willing to even consider that prospect. Mahmoud Abbas is calling for an end to the war, but that is for his benefit, not because he truly wants peace.

In an interview with Reuters at his office in Ramallah, Abbas, 87, said the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians in general had reached an alarming stage that requires an international conference and guarantees by world powers.

He reiterated his longstanding position in favour of negotiation rather than armed resistance to end the longstanding occupation.

“I am with peaceful resistance. I am for negotiations based on an international peace conference and under international auspices that would lead to a solution that will be protected by world powers to establish a sovereign Palestinian state in the Gaza Strip, the West Bank and East Jerusalem,” he said.

Abbas said that based on a binding international agreement, he would revive the weakened Palestinian Authority, implement long-awaited reforms and hold presidential and parliamentary elections, which were suspended after Hamas won in 2006 and later pushed the PA out of Gaza.

He said the PA had abided by all the peace deals signed with Israel since the 1993 Oslo Accord and the understandings that followed over the years but that Israel had reneged on its pledges to end the occupation.

Asked whether he would risk holding elections given the possibility that Hamas could win as it did in 2006, he said: “Whoever wins wins, these will be democratic elections.”

And there we have it. Abbas is looking to solidify his own power by taking a cue from Kamala Harris, who said a week ago that the Palestinian Authority needed to be “revitalized.”

Sorry, that’s not going to happen with Abbas. First of all, he is 87 years old (some sources say 88 years old). He isn’t in a position to guarantee any future agreements, and we have no idea who will seize power of the Palestinian Authority once he is dead. Second, Abbas is a rabid anti-Semite. It’s total bullshit that the PA “abided” by the Oslo Accords, which have long since been dead and buried, with Yasser Arafat launching the Second Intifada a handful of years later. The Palestinian Authority is busy PAYING the families of Hamas members as part of their “Martyrs’ Fund.” Despite the wishes of the Biden administration, the PA is not a viable peace partner that can replace Hamas. If Abbas wishes to prove that he is serious about peace, then he needs to cut off the funds to the families of those alleged “martyrs” who are getting paid because their family member murdered Jews. Yes, he probably is making those payments so Hamas doesn’t attack the PA. That doesn’t make it any better, it only makes it a bribe.

And in the meantime, Hamas must be eliminated. The IDF is working to accomplish that goal, even though Hamas is still firing rockets into Israel.

The United Nations needs to demand actual accountability from its UNRWA workers, and figure out where the millions in aid has gone. Trying to force a ceasefire resolution was a foolish gamble, and it failed. Honestly, how were they even going to enforce that if it HAD passed? Did they plan on sending UN “peacekeepers” to Gaza or something? Like always, the UN expects the United States to do the work for them. This time, though, it didn’t work. Uprooting Hamas is going to cost Israel in blood and treasure, but it has to be done. If the UN wants to fix the “humanitarian crisis,” then it should demand that Hamas surrender immediately. Nothing else will do.

The UN is a front for third world know nothings to siphon dollars off the US and nickles off Europe.

The UN has become more and more anti-American, We should withdraw from the UN and kick them out of our country. File UN under “sounded like a good idea at the time”

Exactly! They are worse than worthless, and should be banished from the US forthwith. All they are is an organization that uses our own money against us. It’s long past time to get out of the UN.

“It will take a full “de-nazification” of the current population “… Which is something that just isn’t possible (unless you mean killing every living thing in the area, which I’m actually ok with), as the vast majority of Pali’s, like most other muslims, wholeheartedly support Ham-Ass…
As for the UNWRA members involved in taking / keeping hostages, the IDF should terminate them with extreme prejudice, as an example of what such treachery results in.
This BS vote is as clear an example as it gets that no matter what actions Israel takes, these closet nazi’s will castigate them for it, and continue to support their destruction. As such, they should stop worrying about trying to “play nice’ and not upset the rest of the world, and instead just get about the business of doing what needs done, and that is wiping out Ham-Ass and those that support them, regardless of what percentage of Gaza that is.

In William Shirer’s book, End of the Berlin Diary, written in the immediate postwar period, he begins by attending and commenting on the founding of the UN in San Francisco. He and many others hoped it would work and truly be a force for peace. Shirer was a realist, and he only expressed the hope that it would work. From San Francisco, he returned to Germany to report on the destruction and rebuilding.
The UN should have been called out as soon as it became acceptable that one member state – Iran – began to repeatedly declare its intent to destroy another member state – Israel.
At this point it is probably impossible to disband the UN, but countries that seriously consider how their funding is actually being spent could certainly cut off specific financing. UNRWA ought to be the first to be defunded and dismissed.
