About 450 students gathered yesterday to hear a speech from Ben Shapiro, sponsored by the Young America’s Foundation at Otay Ranch High School in Chula Vista, California.
The students listened until Dean Nafarette, the school’s assistant principal and Title IX officer, cut into Shapiro’s speech, dismissing students because Shapiro “crossed a line”.
The portion of the speech that caused Nafarrette to become unhinged and hijack Shapiro’s speech was this:
“The reason people are permanently poor in the United States, isn’t because they don’t have money, it’s because they suck with money. The reasons people are temporarily poor can vary. That’s not even controversial. If you’re permanently poor [in America] for your entire life, you’re not great with money by definition…”
Naferrette stepped in at that point and dismissed students giving the reason later that some of these students came from low-income families and he wanted to “protect their feelings”:
“I’m sorry, Mr. Shapiro. I’m at a point right now, where, quite frankly, I’m going to dismiss the students… With all due respect, Mr. Shapiro, Mr. Shapiro represents a narrative that he’s providing to all you guys based on his opinions, what he believes, what he wants to share with all of you. I know that the education was there for all of you to understand, the left side, right side, whatnot, but also the opportunity was allowed for him to impress some of his opinions on certain things… I think what this is getting into now, it’s starting to cross a line.”
Shapiro sounded off on the Daily Wire and you can see his commentary here.
Despite the departure of half of the students after given the thumbs up to skeddadle, Shapiro has been getting many invitations to burst liberal bubbles and set off “triggers” nationwide:
@benshapiro come speak at UNLV. The Bernie Sanders movement is becoming Ridiculous, but I feel you could persuade a lot of people. Well done

@benshapiro @Nero Oh please come to GMU! I'm sure it'd be just as fun of an experience. And a necessary one for the students at that.

Apparently, stating that some Americans who remain poor may not be victims of rich individuals’ exploits but a product of their own irresponsibility with credit and earnings is “crossing a line”. Students who may have parents who are doing exactly this need to have their “feelings protected.” Of course, school administrations have bought into this train of thought and dismissed that quite possibly, students from low-income families may want to break this cycle. There’s no doubt in my mind that some families have legitimate difficulties making ends meet and are still, by definition, poor. I have seen this and I personally have been there. I have also seen individuals rack up a bunch of credit card debt on cars and gadgets who yet seem to have no money for rent and are on government assistance. Kids see this pattern of behavior happening in their homes. To say some individuals (adults) impose a life of poverty on themselves by irresponsible decisions such as credit card debt and gambling is just truth-brutal honesty in my humble opinion. “Responsible” education administrators are not interested, however, in educating these kids on how not to make the same mistakes. Instead, they want to “protect feelings”. Can’t have any one claiming that perhaps, their parents are making stupid mistakes now, can we? Sure. Let’s keep our children coddled and sheltered to any options that there may be a better future on the horizon and by all means, while we’re at it, keep the legacy of being dependent on our government going for generations. Because deficits, discouragement, dependence versus independence and poverty are all soooo much better than hurting feelings.
Shame on him for rocking the liberal boat. 🙂
