Should Tony Gonzales Of Texas Resign?

The Republican Majority Congress has a very thin majority. Like onion paper it has been thin and strong. Big, Beautiful Bill strong. The Balance of Power is 218-213. Yikes. Now, some are calling for Representative Tony Gonzales of Texas to resign after icky emails surfaced he wrote to a staffer. The staffer later committed suicide.

For background, Tony Gonzales was elected to Congress in November, 2020. He is in the 23rd Congressional District of Texas, the seat formerly held by Will Hurd who did not run. In 2024, Gonzales narrowly beat Brandon Herrera who is running again.

From Wikipedia, here are some biographical details on Gonzales:

Gonzales was raised in San Antonio, Devine, and Camp Wood, Texas. He earned an Associate of Arts from Chaminade University, a Bachelor of Science from Excelsior College, a graduate certificate in legislative studies from Georgetown University, and a Master of Arts from American Public University. He is in a PhD program at the University of Southern Mississippi, where he has specialized in international development, security studies, and international politics.

From 1999 to 2019, Gonzales served in the United States Navy,[16] retiring with the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer.[17] A trained cryptologist, Gonzales was deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. He was also stationed in Tampa, Florida; Pensacola, Florida; Kāneʻohe Bay; and San Antonio, and assigned to the United States Navy Office of Legislative Affairs.

Gonzales served as a Department of Defense fellow in the office of Senator Marco Rubio and also worked as an assistant professor of political science at the University of Maryland.

Gonzales and his wife, Angel, have six children. Angel served as the treasurer and custodian of records for Gonzales’s campaign. He is Catholic.

That’s a pretty hard-packed resume for someone so young. It makes no sense why someone so smart and talented would have such feet of clay. Allegedly. Speaking of which, here is the story right now about Tony Gonzales:

House Speaker Mike Johnson is resisting calls, including from within his own ranks, to pressure Rep. Tony Gonzales to resign amid allegations he had an affair with a district staffer who later died by suicide, telling reporters he wants investigations to play out first.

Johnson conceded the accusations were “very serious” and that he has urged the San Antonio Republican to address them with his constituents directly. But the Republican leader insisted ongoing investigations should play out before he would step down.

“There are serious accusations, and it must be taken seriously, and I’ve told him he’s got to address that with his constituents and, and he’s in the process of doing that,” the speaker told CNN.

“It is my understanding there’s an investigation in the state of Texas on these matters and has been going for some time, and the Office of Congressional Conduct has also, it’s been reported, they’ve been looking at it and all of that was news to me. But I … think as in every case like this, you have to allow the investigations to play out and all the facts to come out.”

As the March 3 primary in the state draws nearer, allegations that Gonzales had an affair with a staffer who died by suicide last year have taken new hold. Gonzales has denied the affair and said he’s being blackmailed. But new text messages provided to CNN by the staffer’s husband show that Gonzales sent lewd messages to her, including in one exchange asking for a “sexy pic.”

Super ick. People always find out about affairs AND if this lady committed suicide because of this then more shame on Gonzales. Speaker Johnson says the serious allegations must be taken seriously.

Nancy Mace and Lauren Boebert are two of the Congressweenies calling on Tony Gonzales to resign:

Republican Congresswomen Lauren Boebert and Nancy Mace are demanding that their colleague, Rep. Tony Gonzales, resign amid recent reports that allege the congressman sent provocative text messages to a former staffer with whom he had an affair before the staffer died by suicide.

For months, Gonzales, 45, has been embroiled in a scandal around the death of Regina Ann Santos-Aviles, his former staffer, who claimed to have an affair with the congressman. Santos-Aviles, 35, died by suicide in September 2025.

Gonzales has declined to comment on the affair allegations. But text messages, obtained and published by the San Antonio Express-News, renewed attention to the situation.

“The allegations against Congressman Tony Gonzales are deeply disturbing: a sitting Member of Congress accused of soliciting explicit photos from a staffer and subjecting her to graphic sexual texts. This is an abuse of power,” Mace wrote in a statement Monday.

The messages from May 2024 show the Texas Republican asked Santos-Aviles to “send me a sexy pic” and continued asking for one despite her apprehensiveness. In other messages, Gonzales asked Santos-Aviles provocative questions about sexual intercourse. Santos-Aviles texted Gonzales that he was taking things “too far” twice.

Super ick square. Man or woman the hutzpah is off the charts. I am looking at both Mace and Boebert.

Brandon Herrera narrowly lost to Gonzales in 2024. He is a YouTube content creator with 4.2 million subscribers. For example:

Yes, he is a “gun nut”. The Daily Beast wrote “Gun nut candidate brutally drags ‘cheater’ MAGA rep’s affair defense”:

The MAGA lawmaker accused of cheating on his wife with a member of his staff—who later died by suicide—has been brutally dragged by his “Gun Nut” opponent.

Rep. Tony Gonzales posted a bizarre defense to his alleged infidelity on Thursday, claiming that he was being “blackmailed” just in time to thwart his electoral chances in the GOP primary, for which early voting began this week.

The post instantly backfired. The Trump-endorsed candidate from San Antonio, Texas, was significantly “ratioed” in his replies, with the largest margin stemming from his 30-year-old opponent, YouTuber Brandon Herrera.

This is very bad and icky. If Tony Gonzales had any moral wherewithal, he would endorse Herrera, the “gun nut”. Pray for the family of Regina Santos-Avila.
