A registered sex offender collared in an Internet sting four years ago is running for mayor of a small Dallas suburb.
James Brian Sliter (SLY’-ter) says he’s sorry and needs to prove he can be an asset to his community. The 42-year-old was arrested after arranging sex with someone he met on the Internet who he thought was a 15-year-old girl.Sliter was placed on 10 years of probation for attempting to commit sexual assault of a child. The case will eventually be dismissed if he stays out of trouble.
Sliter says he’s not asking residents of the suburb of Wilmer to condone what he did. He just wants them to forgive him and give him a chance.
Current Mayor Don Hudson says a sex offender serving as mayor will put a stigma on the city.
Needs to prove he can be an asset to the city? Prove it to who? Is he doing this to fix his reputation or because he actually is qualified to be mayor of this city? This reeks of liberalism. I don’t know what party he wants to run for (given that it isn’t listed in the story, my guess would be Democrat), but it’s such a liberal point-of-view to do something to make yourself feel better. It will hurt this poor wittle sex-offenders feewwings, see, if Wilmer residents don’t let him prove himself, if they don’t forgive him… for trying to have sex with a 15-year-old! But who cares? If it feels good, do it!
I would say that no resident in their right mind would vote this guy into office. But the names Kwame Kilpatrick, Marion Barry, and Ray Nagin are coming to mind.
And the current mayor’s response is just priceless. A sex offender serving as mayor will put a stigma on the city?!
Uh… you think?!
The fact that this is even being considered, that this is even in the news, is sad. Sad, sad, sad. Why would anyone give this guy the time of day? The appropriate response to a sex offender wanting to run for office is either a middle finger to the face, or loud laughter followed by a slamming door. This guy shouldn’t get even the tiniest modicum of respectability.
Aw, but he’s sorry, so we should just let it go, right? Right, liberals? He didn’t actually hurt anyone (although not for lack of trying). If he wants to run for mayor, we should just let him, right?
Jeez. How about we throw this guy in jail rather than only giving him probation for trying to have sex with a child and never, ever letting him come into any kind of contact with a child again for the rest of his life? How about that?
