Retired Generals Testify On Afghanistan Withdrawal

Retired Generals Mark Milley and Frank McKenzie testified before the House Foreign Affairs Committee regarding the disastrous Afghanistan Withdrawal today. The House Foreign Affairs Committee is chaired by Texas Congressman Michael McCaul with New York Congressman Gregory Meeks as the Ranking Member. This hearing is titled “An Assessment of the Biden Administration’s Withdrawal from Afghanistan by America’s Generals.” Fat chance! We already know that it’s Trump’s fault.

Ah, a tale of two Generals. According to General Milley, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, we owe Gold Star Families answers and he will contact the families:

Here is the full statement by General Milley:

On the other hand, Marine General McKenzie, former CentCom Commander and Citadel graduate:

The former U.S. commander who oversaw the 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan said Tuesday that he alone bears responsibility for the American soldiers killed during the attack at Kabul’s airport.

“I was the overall commander and I and I alone bear full military responsibility for what happened at Abbey Gate,” said former Retired Gen. Kenneth F. McKenzie Jr., who served as commander of U.S. Central Command from 2019 to 2022, during a congressional hearing.

That’s very nice of him now, but prior to today he took NO ACCOUNTABILITY. Remember, when McKenzie said:

Gen Frank McKenzie, the head of central command, told the House armed services committee that once the US troop presence was pushed below 2,500 as part of President Joe Biden’s decision in April to complete a total withdrawal by September, the unraveling of the US-backed Afghan government accelerated.

“The signing of the Doha agreement had a really pernicious effect on the government of Afghanistan and on its military, psychological more than anything else, but we set a date – certain for when we were going to leave and when they could expect all assistance to end,” McKenzie said.

He was referring to a 29 February 2020, agreement that the Trump administration signed with the Taliban in Doha, Qatar, in which the US promised to fully withdraw its troops by May 2021 and the Taliban committed to several conditions, including stopping attacks on American and coalition forces. The stated objective was to promote a peace negotiation between the Taliban and the Afghan government, but that diplomatic effort never gained traction before Biden took office in January.

Nothing in the Doha Agreement was set in stone if the Taliban didn’t meet their obligations. The Taliban met none of their obligations. The 2500 troops could have stayed at Bagram. But the Democrats believe it is Trump’s fault no matter what the Generals say:

We will never get answers from any of these clowns. The best information is still classified. What a shite show!
