Todd Starnes of Fox News has a new post up titled “Now the cultural cleansers want to ban a familiar Southern word“. The word is (cover the children’s ears) “Dixie”. Dixie, as in the land below the Mason-Dixon line. And, just what is the Mason-Dixon line? According to History.com (hardly a bastion of racism), on October 18, 1767:
On this day in 1767, Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon complete their survey of the boundary between the colonies of Pennsylvania and Maryland as well as areas that would eventually become the states of Delaware and West Virginia. The Penn and Calvert families had hired Mason and Dixon, English surveyors, to settle their dispute over the boundary between their two proprietary colonies, Pennsylvania and Maryland.
Although some “historians” dispute that this is why it is called Dixie, does it really matter? Does it matter that the words to the song “Dixie” do not support white supremacy, racism, slavery or The South? Bob Dylan only sings the first verse and the refrain, but the supporting video for his version of Dixie shows hard working, hard scrabble people with black and white skin in all of their dignity.
Here are the words to Dixie:
By Daniel D. Emmett, 1859
O, I wish I was in the land of cotton Old times there are not forgotten Look away! Look away! Look away! Dixie Land. In Dixie Land where I was born in Early on one frosty mornin’ Look away! Look away! Look away! Dixie Land. Chorus: O, I wish I was in Dixie! Hooray! Hooray! In Dixie Land I’ll take my stand To live and die in Dixie |: Away, away, away down south in Dixie! 😐 |
2. Old Missus marry Will, the weaver, William was a gay deceiver Look away! Look away! Look away! Dixie Land. But when he put his arm around her He smiled as fierce as a forty pounder Look away! Look away! Look away! Dixie Land. Chorus:3. His face was sharp as a butcher’s cleaver But that did not seem to grieve her Look away! Look away! Look away! Dixie Land. Old Missus acted the foolish part And died for a man that broke her heart Look away! Look away! Look away! Dixie Land. Chorus |
It is time to push back. It is time to say no more. We want all of our history. The good, the bad and the ugly. If we hadn’t been there, we could not be here. Many people of all colors have died for our history.
Excrement is the soap of the “cultural cleansers”-they smear everything with it.
Excrement is the soap….genius.
I said it with the Confederate Battle Flag kerfuffle: they want to destroy the South because it stands in the way of their hedonistic fascism.
Absolutely right you are.
You know, if everything just disappeared that someone thought was racist, someone would still find something to complain about. The thought of history, yours, mine and others being deleted because it offends someone today…have lost sight of why lives were lost and wars are fought.
Exactly, Bob. History tells us who we are and how we got here. Erase our history and we have no commonality.
