If you were going to a posthumous Medal of Honor ceremony, how would you think you should act? What would you wear? Certainly you wouldn’t walk in all upbeat and positive, and you wouldn’t be popping the cork off a bottle of champagne. Likewise, you wouldn’t walk in wearing a Hawaiian print shirt or a brightly colored cocktail dress, right?
Well, someone forgot to tell Michelle Obama that a posthumous Medal of Honor ceremony might be, I don’t know, kind of a somber occasion. And she showed up dressed like this:
US Army First Sergeant Jared Monti died in Afghanistan in June 2006, when he willingly sacrificied himself to save one of his comrades. His parents were there to accept the award for him. Did the First Lady really not think about how they would feel with her dressed like that? Yes, it’s only a dress. However, the way you dress matters. It shows a lot. That’s why people don’t go to job interviews in jeans, and they don’t go to funerals dressed in bright, cheerful colors. But that’s exactly what Michelle did — she showed up to the equivalent of a funeral wearing a bright, cheery dress with flowers on it. She couldn’t possibly have found something a bit more, I don’t know… understated? Or does everything really always have to be about her? I get that she’s the mainstream media’s little fashion plate, but really — she couldn’t have underplayed her wardrobe, just once, out of respect for a man who freaking gave his life for his country?!
For what it’s worth, I actually like the dress. I think it’s a beautiful dress. But it’s completely inappropriate for the occasion and it just further goes to show what little respect the Obamas have for the military. It’s not that I think she needed to wear all black. I don’t think that she needed to wear something dowdy or frumpy. But for goodness sake, could she have just downplayed a little and not have worn something so bold? I mean, really… were kitten heels, gaudy earrings, and a brightly colored floral dress really the best choice for a posthumous Medal of Honor ceremony? Not only was the color of the dress bold, but the cut and design of the dress was inappropriate as well. It looks like a cocktail dress, something she would wear to one of she and Barack’s little celebrity parties they have every week. Everything about it is inappropriate. And either she didn’t take the time to think about what would be an appropriate dress for the occasion or she didn’t care. Either way, it doesn’t speak very highly for her, does it?
Jared Monti was a courageous soldier who gave his life for his country. He deserves better than this, as does his family. His parents deserved respect from the President and the First Lady, but what did they get? Michelle Obama, dressed like she was going to a party.
Rest in peace, First Sergeant Monti. Your sacrifice is appreciated by most of us.

Actually putting the emphasis on this white dude, and not on a proud, beautiful (so we’re told) black woman is probably racist.
Really? I don’t even think the dress is very cute. She has NO fashion sense, no matter how many times we are told she does.
When I saw the headline, “Michelle Obama has no class” , I thought “Must be a slow news day, that’s nothing new.” Then I saw the dress she wore to honor the sacrifice of a fallen hero.

I am appalled. How inappropriate and inconsiderate can you be?
Wow. She’s too foolish to understand that she would have made a far more powerful fashion statement showing how one can be dignified, classy, with a sharp wardrobe, and be appropriately attired for a funeral. That’s tougher.
On a side note, I’ve attended two funerals in which I was instructed to NOT wear black or somber clothing. One was for a sixteen year old boy who had died in an accident; only a few months before, he had told his dad that he would want people to celebrate his life. His dad eulogised his son and wore a Hawaiian shirt.
The Obamas, however, have not even that excuse; they did not know this young man and are there, in any event, not to celebfate his life but to thank his parents, on behalf of America, for his courage.

Not long ago, I brought up the subject of Michelle Obama’s lack of fashion sense, which has been pointed out several times. I was basically told, “She’s black. The standards are different.” I guess the same thing applies here.
Uli says: Michelle Obama is the worst dressed First Lady in the history of the US. She either looks like a lava lamp or like she used one of the White House’s tablecloths to make a floral dress. It’s not just that she doesn’t dress appropriately for the occasion. It’s that most, if not all, of her wardrobe choices are tacky.
mj says: Though I think Michelle Obama usually wears things which look like the President’s birthday cake (look it up, if you can’t remember), I feel I must take the low road and say that I like this dress, even if it is a really bad choice for the occasion. In kinder days, while in college, we denounced people with the word “ethnocentric,” but I’ll have to defer to the current dialog on racial oppression, I suppose. Please report for mandatory sensitivity training.
Appaled, disgusted and I have a sick feeling in my stomach. Why does this “person” have to be the center of the universe ALL the time? this was a time to remember a hero. A man who served our country, defended our freedoms and was fighting for the freedoms of others. Why does she have to even be there? She should have stayed in her garden picking weeds and looking for the cameras.

Jenny says: Too bad this is the 3rd photoshopped picture of this dress I’v seen. It was an all red dress before someone “fixed” it.

Leslie says: I’m always appalled but never surprised – at least she isn’t doing the fist/arm-pumping she did on the campaign trail.
Brutus says: I think Barack carries himself quite well and looks Presidential but his wife comes across as very tacky and ghetto. No fashion sense at all. She is more muscular than he is and even moved her momma into the white house for heaven’s sake… an Ivy league product of Affirmative Action is all I can think of.
