Retired General Flynn is the Trump cabinet choice for National Security Advisor. As a retired intelligence officer, he brings 33 years of experience to the table, right? He was an appointee to the DIA and given his third star (Lt General) to run that agency. Which ended on a less than happy note as Stars & Stripes reports here:
Flynn did not leave the Obama administration on warm terms. In 2014, he was effectively forced out of the Defense Intelligence Agency as part of a leadership shake-up after clashing with officials over his management style and vision for the agency.
To some, clashing with the Obama administration is a feature not a bug. And this experience might be helpful for the incoming administration to drain the swamp, right? Maybe and maybe not. So, who is General Flynn?
He was in the Army for 33 years, rising to the rank of Lt. General and spent his life in military intelligence. And is a repentant former Democrat who was not so fond of the Obama Administration’s foreign policy to be polite. According to USA Today here,
Flynn, 57, has been an outspoken critic of President Obama. He is highly regarded in the military and intelligence communities but was dismissed from the Pentagon’s top intelligence job in late 2014 for his combative style. He’s been a critical force shaping Trump’s world view that the United States is at war with “radical Islamic terrorism,” which stands in contrast to Obama, who’s warned against framing the war on terror along religious lines.
So far so good. And another point in his favor:
“With each appointment made by the president-elect my grave concern about his presidency increases,” House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer, D-Md., said in a statement.
I am not mad at him for stressing Rep Hoyer out. And this is partly ok with everyone:
Flynn is “a man who was fired by President Obama and who has made incendiary, hateful comments about Muslims,” he said. “This should alarm all Americans. In particular, I have serious questions about General Flynn’s competence and composure, his ongoing lobbying on behalf of the Turkish government and his links to Russia.”
Again a point in General Flynn’s favor. General Flynn’s book is called “The Field of Fight: How We Can Win the Global War Against Radical Islam.” Radical Islam Steney Hoyer is not all Muslims. And the Russians again? Well that is an opinion of a guy who is ticked his unqualified incompetent candidate lost, right? Well partially. My concern with Flynn besides being pals with Putin, HE cheerfully and loudly led chants of “Lock her up” regarding a certain breach of security in the RNC and he himself has a known breach of security himself.
The reason this is a concern is what NBC reported here
President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for national security adviser, retired Army Lt. Gen. Mike Flynn, “inappropriately shared” classified information with foreign governments, a 2010 military investigation concluded.
Oops. Perhaps the media is attacking an innocent man? There is no official reprimand, he was not brought to trial and he still was approved to run the Defense Intelligence Agency two years later.
The investigation concluded that he did not act “knowingly” and that “there was no actual or potential damage to national security as a result.”
I can hope he is not as Twitter happy as Mr. Trump and he is not the loose cannon he has been painted as in the media. He does not call out all of Islam but radical Islam (there is a difference folks). Hopefully my concerns are unfounded and he will temper Mr. Trump’s impulsive tweeting.
“inappropriately shared” classified information with foreign governments
Boy, is that a broad, general accusation. Big questions:
Was it marked (originally)?
Was it as part of a coalition operation?
Was it the Brits, the French, or the Pakistanis?
Thank you, Gail, for laying out some different points of view.
I heard that he shared it with the Brits and the Aussies, but unfortunately I can’t find the link or the website now.
Yeah, that’s a little different than sharing it with the French (who will share it with others) or the Pakistanis (who will share it directly with terrorists).
