Met Gala 2023, No AOC, But Still Controversy

The Met Gala 2023 was last night. No, they weren’t blessed with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wearing her ethics breaking “Tax the Rich” dress. This is an event for the famous and infamous so even without Notorious AOC there will be controversy. This year’s gala honored the late Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld, and that in itself was a controversy. There was beauty too, which really is the point of fashion. Plus, Serena Williams announced she is pregnant with baby number two and we are down for that.

There was a small and quiet pushback against honoring Lagerfeld at the Met Gala because he was NOT a nice man. He was German, born in Hamburg, Germany in 1933. Got it? He was notoriously caustic:

Lagerfeld, whose prolific career included leading Fendi, Chanel, and his own eponymous brand, body-shamed women on multiple occasions. He once said those concerned with the extreme thinness of models were “fat mummies sitting with their bags of crisps in front of the television.”

One of his most egregious comments was at the height of the #MeToo movement. In a stunning reveal of his own ignorance, he said he was shocked that “starlets” took “20 years to remember what happened”—as though trauma, stigma, and fear of retaliation weren’t preventing victims from speaking up. And in the world according to Lagerfeld, “If you don’t want your pants pulled about, don’t become a model! Join a nunnery, there’ll always be a place for you in the convent. They’re recruiting, even!”

Models who came forward about their abuse were labeled by Lagerfeld as “stupid,” “toxic,” and “sordid creatures.” If his comments weren’t enough, he showed how he really perceived models speaking out with his infamous faux feminist show, displaying models carrying vapid, nonsensical protest signs—mocking the very real problem that models, despite being the faces of the industry, have historically had no voice within it.

Sort of like AOC wearing the “Tax the Rich” dress at the 2021 Met Gala, right? Lagerfeld would have had a laugh at her, if he hadn’t died at age 85 in 2019.

First, let us talk about Nicole Kidman:

Though many of the attendees at the 2023 Met Gala were wearing gowns inspired by Karl Lagerfeld’s favorite looks and habitual choices, a handful will be arriving in couture designed by the legend himself. On Monday, Nicole Kidman brought back a dress that will be familiar to any Chanel obsessive of a certain age, designed by Lagerfeld for 2004’s “Chanel No. 5: The Film.”

At 55 years old, Kidman is stunningly beautiful. Well, she could have run a comb through her hair. That dress, though. It is beautiful.

Lagerfeld’s cat, Choupette, still alive, but not at the Met Gala was honored by Doja Cat, Jared Leto and Lil Nas X:

No, Doja Cat didn’t have plastic surgery to look like Choupette. That’s done with make up. I should know. My son loved the musical “Cats” when he was young and I sat through it at least five times. Jared Leto was way too serious. If you are dressed as a giant cat, you should be able to laugh at yourself. These people.

Serena Williams used the night to announce her pregnancy:

Mazel Tov to the happy family. Blissful pregnancy, safe delivery and healthy baby.

Let’s talk Britney Griner. Yes, she was at the Met Gala. She wore Calvin Kline, not Chanel or Lagerfeld. She looked like a dude going to do a deal in Aspen.

Yes, I said “She”. I know for a fact that Griner is not a biological male. She was in a women’s prison in Russia. Putin don’t play gender games. They made sure that Griner had lady parts before they put her in prison.

I love fashion. Errr. That is I did before it got ugly. I have never begrudged rich folk having a good time and showing off. I thought it was aspirational. It until these people started letting their political thoughts be known. I still think “Tax the Rich” is stupid and irony-filled when it comes to something like the Met Gala, but there is an inflationary crisis and I bet most of these people flew private. Thoughts?

-Update-

There was an untimely death at the Met Gala:

Met Gala’s Most Unlikely Star Dies On The Red Carpet

The 2023 Met Gala cockroach, we hardly knew ye.

No sooner had the insect found fame on the red carpet of Vogue’s annual fashion extravaganza on Monday, than it was dealt a crushing blow.

Literally.

Crushed. The most interesting creature on the red carpet. Poor Cockroach!

I love to look at a beautiful girl/woman who doesn’t really understand how beautiful she is. They’re the most natural. This group…has there been a more crass, narcissistic, vapid, egotistical, or un-intelligent group ever assembled in one location. People (young beautiful women mostly) so willing to be degraded and objectified with the chance to meet the rich and famous at the glittering cocktail parties, why are they so willing to give up basic self worth and decency to mix and mingle with people who hate them. How willing are they all to jump into bed with someone simply because of the exposure they can get and the money they can earn.

    Is money really that important?

Karl Lagerfeld’s personal style was “Gay Vampire/Cowboy/Mortician. He was simultaneously underdressed and overdressed, always out of style. Why he was a fashion icon is anyone’s guess.
