The more I see of Melania Trump, the more I like her. A few days ago she made her first solo appearance as First Lady with Akie Abe, the wife of Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. The ladies toured the Morikami Museum and Japanese Garden. While in the gardens, Melania revealed that she has a love for gardening and is committed to continuing the tradition of the White House gardens, specifically preserving the Rose Garden and the kitchen garden.
Thank you @morikamimuseum for the inspirational presentation of your sacred gardens & life & culture in Japan. pic.twitter.com/JxfwaPjX06

Melania released a statement on the topic of the importance of gardening to wellbeing:
“The First Lady has a deep personal commitment to her role as caretaker and nurturer, beginning with her family. She believes there is a connection between a child’s mind and places of calm and beauty to be used as a tool for us all. As a mother and as the First Lady of this country, Mrs. Trump is committed to the preservation and continuation of the White House Gardens, specifically the First Lady’s Kitchen Garden and the Rose Garden,” Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, senior adviser to the first lady, said in a statement to CNN.
….
“Both our countries histories and cultures are steeped in the nurture and nature of gardening,” Melania Trump said in a statement. “Having knowledge of different cultures and customs is a wonderful way to learn and to explore. Gardening teaches us the fundamentals in care and the evolution of living things, all while inspiring us to nurture our minds and to relax and strengthen our bodies. I hope that together Mrs. Abe and I can continue to inspire our youth to enjoy the beauty around them and to restore their minds in the peacefulness of their surroundings.”
Beyond Melania’s lovely statement about gardening and wellbeing, I like her sincerity. She is a reserved person and while she was a model in the past, she doesn’t appear to need or want the spotlight. She always looks perfectly coifed, but her fashion choices are not flashy or trashy. She’s not trying to make any statement with her clothes beyond just being herself. I particularly like that a woman of her attributes wears flats. She is a person one would expect to always wear stilettos, because she looks gorgeous in them, and show some leg, but she opts for practicality. Flats allow the attention to go elsewhere, showing she is not interested in upstaging anyone, though she easily could if she tried. She presents a welcoming persona, not an attitude of competition, or trying too hard to communicate a message. She is very classy.
She’s not wearing flats here, but this is one of my favorite looks so far.
Now it’s true that Michelle Obama did wear a lot of flats. The effect of her choices is much more of a statement and draws attention, compared to Melania’s choices.
Let’s just say that even though she is quite tall, Michelle is a lady who needs a little heel. This is a much better look for her and it is still comfortable.
I am quite happy that Melania’s take on the FLOTUS position is so low-key. She is supportive of traditional interests and seeks continuity. She does not seek to nudge people or divide. She is the opposite of mean-spirited. The Left never tires of finding ways to make fun of and demonize nice people, but Melania Trump, former immigrant, is good for America’s unity.
