Students at Portland, Oregon’s Lewis and Clark Law School went into a collective meltdown this afternoon after being assaulted by a vicious, right-wing hate monger. Okay. Not exactly. Feminist scholar and former philosophy professor Christina Sommers tried to give a scheduled speech. Cue: meltdown! Today’s tantrum performance by the (alarmingly enough) next generation of American jurisprudence was triggered by escalating hysteria. It resulted from an unsuccessful attempt to dis-invite Ms Sommers, aka “Known Fascist.”

In a fascinating display of their inability to grasp “basic constitutional freedoms,” the LAW students issued a cease and desist order to the school:
Nine campus groups at the Lewis & Clark Law School in Portland, Ore., demanded that the school’s Federalist Society rescind its invitation to the American Enterprise Institute scholar on the basis that she delegitimizes female suffering and “embolden[s] male-supremacist groups.”
“Sommers has called the epidemic of sexual assault on campuses and the gender wage gap ‘myths,’ refuses to recognize genderqueer and gender non-conforming persons, and denies the existence of male supremacy,” the groups wrote. “Freedom of speech is certainly an important tenet to a free, healthy society, but that freedom stops when it has a negative and violent impact on other individuals.”
“There is no debate here,” emphasized the students from identity-based campus organizations like the Black Law Student Association and Latino Law Society, as well as the Lewis & Clark Young Democratic Socialists of America.
NO debate? At a LAW school? The irony is thick with these ones. “Refuse Fascism in All Its Forms” the demand letter righteously read.
The Lewis and Clark Law School Federalist Society, who had issued the invitation, to their credit, issued a strong, reasonable rebuttal to the rabble rousing. The talk was to proceed as planned.
Fast forward to this afternoon. Ms. Sommers arrived for her session at this institute of higher learning.
Student protesters (mixed with Antifa) gathered with the usual signs, slogans and distinctive attire. Ms. Sommers had just made a valiant attempt at beginning her talk, when this vastly creepy, repetitive interruption occurred:

I love the term “activists.” It’s such a cuddly term for such a frightening mob beast. This is supposed to be a LAW school. A place where students LEARN to safeguard the FREEDOMS fought for and entrusted to us by those who enshrined them in the Constitution. Yet, on today’s campuses, those very freedoms are trampled, RIGHTEOUSLY trampled, by a mob who doesn’t agree with the speaker. I DON’T LIKE WHAT YOU’RE SAYING is the only prerequisite to have your voice silenced. And to Lewis and Clark Law School’s eternal disgrace, these petulant interrupters were not removed from the venue for their uncivil behavior.

As Professor William Jacobson said on his blog today,
“There is a sickness on many campuses that can’t be fully appreciated…”
A sickness that is facilitated by disinterested parents and liberal faculty members, until it bites THEM in the avoirdupois (see Bret Weinstein, Evergreen College ). Then they’re stunned the worm turned, because they never realized it was a snake, snuggled so smugly secure in their progressive, academic world. They are wrapped in the insular cocoons of “God bless you”/”Merry Christmas” are acts of “Islamomisic microaggressions” fantasy lands, paid for by other people’s monster tuition loans, tax dollars and/or the hard earned dollars of folks who still write checks for their kids’ school.
Somewhere, someone had better start demanding an accounting of just what sort of fascist monsters the everybody-gets-a-trophy generation is turning into at these high priced finishing schools. And put a lid on it, fast.

GWB says: When the “Diversity” Dean asked me to end my speech, I’d have responded, “Do you have the authority to end my speech early? If not, then I’m going to continue until I finish my speech.”
And I would have let her know in no uncertain terms that she had failed as a Dean and on the diversity front, unless she counted it as diversity that she allowed communists AND fascists* to violate probity and general manners due someone asked to speak.

If they had true arguments, supported by facts, these imbeciles wouldn’t need the political theater. They would sit and listen to what she had to say, and then, during the Q&A, destroy her arguments one by one. Their histrionics say it all.

One time my torts professor brought up the issue of holding women accountable, in a civil matter, not criminal, if they did drugs while pregnant, for the harm done to their babies.
Interesting issue. I opined that if it had been a pharmaceutical company which had made a drug with adverse effects, we’d hold them liable. Now mind you, I was not advocating for anything, just exploring the issue.
Within 10 seconds I was a Nazi. Yes, I was called a Nazi. For simply wanting to discuss and explore an issue. In a classroom. In higher education. The professor had to shut down the discussion. This was 1990. Portland has only gotten worse.
There is an article on line that law schools are not teaching rape laws because it is triggering. So now lawyers will have no idea how to handle rape cases.

So they go to meet some other tough guys. They’re about to take on the other tough guys. Just before the encounter, Fonzie takes Richie aside. “One thing I didn’t mention,” says Fonzie. “At some point, to be tough you actually had to hit somebody sometime.”
This is what’s missing from colleges these days. The administration has to expel somebody for disrupting a meeting. Just do it once, then the problem goes away.
