even with the ‘less-then-great liberator’ as president, those of us in America take freedom, democracy and liberty for granted. it has been our birthright since the beginning of our country. for iran, totalitarianism by the supreme leader and mullahs, have ruled for so long that when it’s core foundation is shaken like this, it’s remarkable.

it’s amazing how long totalitarians can actually stay in power isn’t it? look at nk and the kim dictator dynasty. this is especially curious to me given the cry for freedom that is so completely in human dna.
the father of modern political theory, niccolo machiavelli, once said that every form of government ultimately rests on the consent of the governed. is that ever so true! (definately for an obama post on another day! heh.)
the supreme leader (and the mullahs) in iran have maintained control with a tight fist, but that strategy depended on dividing and conquering. iran is quite knowledgeable how to use real torture, kidnappings and disappearances, horrible brutality and bloodshed, and of course those massive public hangings to silent dissent from it’s people. surely these ‘where is my vote?’ protests will end with public hangings — but for whom? after all the challenger, mousavi, is just as hardline in many ways as the completely certifiable ahmadinejad.
and really, in looking at the amazing photos coming out of iran on an hourly basis, what can the mullahs do to maintain its totalitarian grip on power, when the protestors now number not in the hundreds, but in the hundreds of thousands – even millions?
Micky says: This is huge. I pray these people get what they want for number of reasons the first being that will be free from and autocratic thelogical dictatorship. Should the Clerics and the Ayatollah be put out to pasture the outlook for Hamas and Hezzbolla are not going to be good. The outlook for Israel will of improved like it hasnt for decades. Along with Iraq it will also go to show another example of a free and soverieign nation. Hopefully what we”ll see is a domino effect of other middle eastern countries who will follow the models. The implications for the entire middle east and the world cant be anything but good if they defeat this regime.
I wish I was there with them. We all need to cry out for these people and let them know that whether or not Obama is going to come out with a more supportative statement for them or nor that we are all standing behind them 100% and start asking the rest of the world to do the same.

Micky says: Which is why its been stated by Iranians that this is not realy about the opposition getting Mousavi in office as it is about riding the country of the “Supreme Leader”.
Mousavi, Ahmajinedad, are just mouthpeices for what will be more of the same if the “real leaders” are left in place. I think to say that a revolution is evolving would be more accurate. I dont think we’ll see a revolution that comes in one clean sweep.
Obama addressed the situation by saying he has faith in the supreme leader.
What ? You mean you have faith in the guy whos having these people beat in the streets. How can he stand behind those that want the theocracy gone if hes going to say he has faith in the actions of that theocracy ?
I think saying that he has faith that the will of the people will prevail would be a whole lot better and sensda massage to the leaders who continue to threaten their neighbors and the world that we are watching you.
I’m curious what Obama would do if this erupts into a full scale bloddy repression by the state. Will he still say he supports the Ayatollah ? Are we going to sit by while innocents are slaughtered in the streets ?
I wouldnt put it past them seeing as how its well known that Iran resorts to those methods. I’ll bet this one of the first things on many of our minds.

What we disagree about is Obama’s stance here. If he were to speak up the way Kate and others want, it would fuel the hate of the regime and they would crack down that much harder. We cannot look like we are taking sides even though we feel like it. The President is completely doing the right thing because if he were to do a “Shrub”, there would be blood running in the streets right now.

More like “could” crack down that much harder. There are no guarantees.They could make things difficult for us in Iraq and Afghanistan also.
I think he should let them know that we will help to ensure that whatever happens we wont let innocent people be killed and that no option is off the table.
Instead, what weve seen so far is Obama siding with the clerics who are allowing the deaths weve seen so far. At that point I’m sure that pulling a “shrub’ wouldnt be so reprehensible.
Theres three elements at play here that could dicate any number of things happening
Those who want to keep the same theocracy with either Ahmajinedad or Mousavi as president.
And then theres those that want no theocracy at all, a secular democratic state.
Whats complicated is that some of these people who are opposing Ahmajinedad are in favor of Mousavi yet still want the theocracy out. Mousavi is not too different from Ahmajinedad in his ideology and would also be subjected to the will of the Ayatollah who has already set up and constructed strategies depending on many of Ahmajinedads alliances. They’re buddies.

Do you see what’s happening in Iran ? Can you take a hint ? A clue ?
Look at what happens when people are told what you just told everyone. Look at what happens when the people are subjected to a media that is loyal to the leadership of their country and truth becomes a rare commodity. Look at what happens when people are told they are irrelevant and to sit down and be quiet or better yet they are not wanted and to leave.
Are you aware that the people of Iran no longer want a leadership that is much like the one Obama is putting together ? The people do not want a leadership that deals in hate, bigotry and the complete control of all information. They want freedom of speech without being subjected to the sentiments of people like you.
Obamanites and the hateful minions that are part of his following are you paying attention ?
Keep lying to the American people, forcing policies that we don’t want, taking away our basic rights, creating foreign policy that endangers our safety. Keep up the direction your going in with only one supreme leader accountable to no one who is creating a government full of czars also accountable to no one and you will see an uprising in America much like what you’re seeing in Iran.
You and those who think like Christina could learn a lot by taking a look at what’s going on over there right now.

You are not the supreme leader who is allowed to blanket his administrations actions in secrecy. I suggest all you liberals who are admiring what the Iranian people are doing right now take a closer look at the reasons and motivation behind such a movement. Excellent rebuttal there, Mick. But, I think Christina should be given credit for her honesty, rare though it is. And by their silent non-opposition, I think them lefties are loudly voicing their assent (with her). Which is fine by me.
I think Christina and her fellow loser-libs are quite right to hate us. I think everything evil and worthless and dispicable should hate and envy and fear everything good, virtuous, righteous and beautiful. I think they are becoming best known for their hypocracies and corruptions, and their time, like the reign of those mullahs, will be relatively and thankfully short.
I only wish buddies of hers like Alec Baldwin would have remained true to his word when he promised to leave America if Dubya got elected.

Yeah, in a way they are quite right to hate us if you’re coming from their warped perspectives . But I think “fear” is whats really at play here. They are obviously the ones who afraid of adapting to any kind of compromise for the fear that they will lose power.
