If you’re a conservative living in Oregon like me, you pretty much are use to the horrible politicking of the Left, whilst living in the shadows of Socialism. However if the new bill, HB 3200 gets passed into law, I may as well pack up my family and leave the state if I care or have any interest in Second Amendment rights — it’s truly just that bad.
Case in point: Two days after Oregon Senate Democrats claimed they would not seek a ban on modern firearms and feeding devices, Democrats in the Oregon House introduced a sweeping ban on virtually all modern firearms. Hot Air has done a great job at pulling the facts of the Oregon Gun Bill, HB3200 Summary together:
– Creates crime of unlawful possession or transfer of assault weapon or large capacity magazine.
– Punishes by maximum penalty of 10 years’ imprisonment, $250,000 fine, or both.
– Requires current owners to dispose of or register assault weapons and large capacity magazines.“That should be bad enough on its own, but if you really dig into the guts of this bill, it actually gets worse. After spending quite a bit of ink defining “assault weapons” as pretty much anything with cosmetic attachments which look scary to somebody, we get to the meat of the proposal.”
Any person who, prior to the effective date of this law, was legally in possession of an assault weapon or large capacity magazine shall, within 120 days after the effective date of this 2013 Act, without being subject to prosecution:
(a) Remove the assault weapon or large capacity magazine from the state;
(b) Sell the assault weapon or large capacity magazine to a firearms dealer licensed under 18 U.S.C. 923 for lawful sale or transfer under subsection (2) of this section;
(c) Surrender the assault weapon or large capacity magazine to a law enforcementagency for destruction;
(d) Render the assault weapon permanently inoperable;“Oh, wait… did I say that was the bad part. I think I actually meant to refer to this truly tasty treat near the very end. After specifying that even under grandfathering you can only have one “assault rifle” and three high capacity magazines, these high level edicts are handed down.”
(3) The department shall create and maintain a registry for owners of assault weapons and large capacity magazines who qualify for registration under section 4 of this 2013 Act. The department may adopt rules concerning the administration of the registry, including but not limited to renewal and revocation procedures and storage requirements for assault weapons and large capacity magazines.
(4) The department may conduct inspections of registered owners of assault weapons and large capacity magazines to ensure compliance with the storage requirements of section 4of this 2013 Act.
SECTION 6. This 2013 Act being necessary for the immediate preservation of the public peace, health and safety, an emergency is declared to exist, and this 2013 Act takes effect on its passage.
It’s unbelievable don’t you think? And if this is not enough, Oregon’s massive gun law would combine the most extreme and irrational elements of other bills that have been introduced across the country. For example, one of the firearms banned under this bill would be a pistol with a “folding, telescoping or thumb-hole stock.”
The bill also bans such evil features as “pistol grips” and “barrel shrouds” because clearly they add to the scariness of any firearm! The Democrat lawmakers in Oregon, pulling this bill together, are so full of hatred for gun owners they don’t even understand what they are banning. And of course, we’ve been assured on a daily basis by the Obama Administration that “the authorities” aren’t coming to kick down the doors of law abiding gun owners, right? Yet according to HB3200, they are clearly opening the door in Oregon to unscheduled, uninvited visits to people on the registry list. Some say if it passes in Oregon, it will spread across the country to other liberal enclaves.
Really?

I wish that people would stop referring to this as the product of the extreme left; it just polarizes your support. I am about as liberal as people can be, but I find HB3200 extremely dangerous for a lot of reasons, including several that are mentioned in this blog. I believe that the second amendment is precisely there defend the population from having their rights over-run either from external foes or from within (not just hunting) and I do not believe that we are yet evolved enough in our country to say that this is not still a real risk. I actually believe that the risk is not from Leftist/Socialist overthrow (Obama is hardly a socialist). I think the greatest risk is from the very wealthy who have sucked the cash our of our society to create a sense of scarcity and that keeps us fighting each other. We are stretched so thin that we cannot even take care of ourselves properly, much less the family around us and this keeps us down. If money were routed back into communities and families, crime would drop and events like Sandy Hook would be a thousand times less likely.
This bill would pit good Americans against good Americans and further divide our Union. What the advocates of the 2nd amendment need to do is offer some way to provide oversight to gun ownership without the need for massive government intervention. We all also need to stop looking at the government as an enemy. If it isn’t working, fix it, get involved, but without it, not even our guns will protect us. It is supposed to be for the people, of the people and by the people and if it isn’t, it needs to be made that way. There is no other option. The constitution makes this explicitly clear and is the defining characteristic that makes this nation worth fighting for, notwithstanding the current leadership.
The H.B. 3200 is “ultimately” aimed at dis-arming Americans. All Americans should be aware of this. God Bless the U.S.A.
