Ghostbusters was a great 80’s film. With a catchy soundtrack (and I know you are singing along…) and a funny cast it was an escape film. 2016 Ghostbusters was…. A social justice film with the proper amount of women and politically correct everything. So surely the more enlightened population will bust down the doors to see this masterpiece, right?
The Hollywood Reporter said this:
As of Aug. 7, Ghostbusters had earned just under $180 million at the global box office, including $117 million domestic. The film still hasn’t opened in a few markets, including France, Japan and Mexico, but box-office experts say it will have trouble getting to $225 million despite a hefty net production budget of $144 million plus a big marketing spend. The studio has said break-even would be $300 million.
But social justice! And girl power! Actually no. I have the honor of being an aunt to tween girls. And from time to time take said tweens on a day trip. Usually involving blueberries and yogurt or a trip to five below.
Going to any movie not named Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter is not on my list. Why? Because movies like this do not give value. A day at the movies is rather expensive. Admission price of about $10 per person plus popcorn and drinks means this has to be a really good movie. Otherwise Amazon Prime or Netflix or the library has a good selection of the best and worst movies. Bad movies are fun to deconstruct as Mystery Science Theater 3000 does so well. But not in the theater. Unless you are 17 at the midnight showing of the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
If Hollywood wants butts in seats they need to provide a decent product. Not something more boring than annual diversity training videos you watch at work. Which are better made and actually put their message out with less sanctimony and posturing. And cost less to make. You would think this is common sense right? Hollywood lacks that virtue it seems.
Good points, but you forgot to mention all the misandry found in the movie.
+1 for the MST3K reference.
The wage gap is REAL!!!
Original Ghostbusters-$295 mil
Remake Ghostbusters-$225 mil
difference? $0.78 to $1………
Hollywood lacks that virtue it seems.
Heh! Hollywood lacks any virtue!
