A quote: “Hatred is active, and envy passive dislike; there is but one step from envy to hate.” ~~ Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

I’ll start with a story …

*************************************

It was a tiny, tidy little house and had been in the old woman’s family for 4 generations.

Summers she spent on her porch, a pitcher of cold lemonade for any drop by visitor, sewing in her lap – handmade doll clothes for the neighborhood girls who stopped by and admired.

Content, she stayed the same. Her neighborhood did not. The hand she waved now brought snarls. Little girls were pushed fast past her home by green-eyed mothers.

They came one night, through the door, dragging her to the street. A whole house for one woman, they cried, how dare you?

*************************************

Now, it’s your turn.

Old Man Johnson was a fixture in the neighborhood. He knew every child there and always said hello to everyone from his porch.

The protesters came by one night, yelling threats at everyone. Then they got to close to his house. He stood up from his chair and grabbed his cane.

“You boys come any closer and I won’t like what happens next!’

They slunk away quickly, not wanting to test him. The next day I was bringing him his groceries and asked him what would have happened.

“I would have tripped and fallen in front of them,” he said.
