Yes, Jake, it is Salon. However, checking in on one of the most blatant anti-American online rags masquerading as “news” site is educational in discovering the latest TDS-fueled diatribe aimed anyone to the right of Mao.
And while Missy Mandy Marcotte is the usual star of tortured leftwing prose, Maoling Chauncey DeVega’s attempts at analyzing “the right” — accompanied by a significant amount of chin-pulling and alarmism — would be laughable if not so downright pretentious.
Going to war should be one of the most difficult decisions a president can make. People will die. That is the very definition of war. But instead of acting with gravitas following his choice to start a war with Iran, Donald Trump and his administration have celebrated the killing and devastation.
In comments to reporters at his Miami resort on March 9, nine days after the war began, the president raised the possibility of all but destroying Iran if they don’t “behave.” He boasted about killing their “sick,” “crazy” and “demented” leaders, calling it “a great honor.”
DeVega spends almost 1,500 words on how terrible and diseased Republicans are and not one word of criticism of Iran. Forty-seven years of Iranian war on America and the west? Not a word. Americans — both citizens and members of the military — killed by Iran or Iranian terrorist proxies? Iran’s dedication to getting nukes? Iran’s wholesale slaughter of its own citizens? Hanging girls for the crime of being raped? DeVega is completely incurious.
As far as DeVega is concerned, Iran is an innocent bystander to the ravening appetites of the Republican “culture of violence”. He even digs up a doctor of epidemiology, Gary Slutkin, who has gained a certain amount of fame for declaring that violence is an infectious disease.
And you can just see the drool dripping off DeVega’s chin:
“What we are watching from this administration in Iran is not just a lack of strategy, recklessness or incompetence,” (Slutkin) said in an email. “As someone who has spent decades studying how violence spreads, I recognize it as something more specific: what I have come to call authoritarian violence disorder. Violence is a disease, with characteristic signs and symptoms that cause disability and death. But AVD is the most lethal form, distinguished by its scale, its cruelty, and its potential for mass death.”
Oooooo! Authoritarian Violence Disorder! Ding Ding Ding! We gots a label, people!
Never mind that DeVega has been labeling Republicans, centrists and moderate liberals as fascists for close to ten years. Now he has a MeDicAl DIagnOSiS to slam against anyone not sufficiently Progressive.
I’m sure he’ll start employing “AVD” as much as he has “fascist” and “racist”, without, you know, looking in the mirror. Chaucey is pro-abortion, pro-transing kids, attacked anyone who had issues with Obama’s 7-month bombing of Libya but, you know, it is the GOP who is the real death cult. Deep blue big cities are crime-ridden meccas of violence, but it is red states who are the problem what with all the guns and Bibles and white people. Such deplorables!
Let’s be clear here. DeVega’s new AVD charge is meaningless. Slotkin’s attempt to medicalize a cultural issue, and without any discussion of morality, is just a new season of political cope. “Violence” as an act is morally null until context is known. DeVega excuses the violence of Islamoterrorist Iran, or Maduro, or communist Cuba because — well, it is America, Israel, and President Trump who are eViL.
There are several acronyms that are applicable to Chauncey DeVega’s one-note ravings. TDS is the top of the list.
