A fifth vote to reopen the government went down last night as it failed to reach the sixty votes necessary to pass the Continuing Resolution. It was the same tired old song and dance. Next week, federal employees and military members will miss paychecks while the House and Senate will continue to be paid.
Politico.com likened the shutdown to Groundhog’s Day, the movie:
The Senate is trapped in a shutdown Groundhog’s Day with no end in sight.
Senators rejected dueling stopgap spending bills Monday for the fifth time as lawmakers show few signs of nearing a detente —even as the shutdown-induced pain is poised to grow as the federal funding lapse heads into its second workweek.
Senate Republicans had hoped the Trump administration’s imminent threat of mass firings, paired with a weekend back home to hear from constituents, would shake loose even a couple of potential swing-vote Democrats. Add to that the fact that most federal workers and active duty members of the military are due to miss their first paychecks Oct. 10 and Oct. 15, respectively.
Democrats had their own Continuing Resolution with $490 million to PBS within three days:
Inside the new spending bill Democrats don’t want you to see

And, you thought, as Darleen wrote yesterday that Democrats really loved illegal immigrants. They do, but they love power and money more.
Democrats, missing the plot, wanted to use their made-up Continuing Resolution to negotiate now.
“We’re ready to work with Republicans to reopen the government and end the health care crisis that faces tens of millions of Americans. But it takes two sides to have a negotiation,” Schumer said.
Republicans also again rejected the Democratic stopgap that would link government funding through October to the party’s health care priorities, including a permanent extension of soon-to-expire Affordable Care Act subsidies, plus restrictions on President Donald Trump’s ability to unilaterally claw back congressionally approved funding.
Top Democrats have demanded a “bipartisan negotiation” on health care as part of the government funding fight. Expanded ACA subsidies aren’t set to expire until the end of the year, but with open enrollment for Obamacare plans to begin Nov. 1, Democrats — and some Republicans — view that as the real deadline for getting an agreement for an extension.
Senator Chuck Schumer having done nothing but work in government his entire professional life knows full well that this the Continuing Resolution is not the place for this but that it belongs in the Appropriations Process.

John Thune knows the Appropriations Process is the appropriate place:
Senate Majority Leader John Thune has said he is only open to negotiating on the health care tax credits once the government is reopened, a position that even some moderate members of his conference have backed. The South Dakota Republican doubled down on this stance Monday.
“We said we’re willing to have those conversations, but it starts with ending the shutdown,” Thune said.
Good luck with that.
The Democrats do love money, power and illegal immigrants. They have no love for federal employees and military personnel. Next week, those personnel will miss their first paychecks. Remember, folks, the Legislative Branch is still getting paid. The lower ranks of troops make pitiful money. I have heard that food banks near to bases are being hit hard already.
Worry a lot about military families at lower ranks where money is very, very tight already.
My husband and I brought a second delivery of diapers and food to the local food bank run by our (Catholic) parish.
They said they will need it.
Please keep the food insecure in heart…

Yes, federal employees and military personnel will get back pay with the government reopens. When you live on a shoestring, getting more behind doesn’t help. Children don’t get less hungry because the government is shut down.
The next vote to pass the Continuing Resolution will be today. Pray for everyone involved.

I’m confused by one point. When I was in the military, everyone got paid once a month, on the first day. Has that changed?
Everyone in the military, every federal government employee was paid on time their last paycheck. The next paycheck is in limbo. Full disclosure: I’m retired Army and a federal employee. I’ll still get my retirement paycheck, but not nothing from my job if Chuckie has his way. Young, lower enlisted families are going to take a high hard one from the democrats.
