Chicago continues its descent into urban hell with two more victims shot to death on Friday night. But a story about bait trucks made the front page of Saturday’s Chicago Tribune instead.
I know this because I have an online subscription to the paper. And there was the bait truck story, right on the front page. Priorities, you know.
Here’s the scoop: Norfolk Southern Railway apologized for its joint effort with Chicago police to lure potential thieves with “Operation Trailer Trap.” The idea was to leave a bait truck filled with goods in Englewood, a high crime neighborhood, as a lure for potential thieves.
First of all, it’s legal. Secondly, its sounds like a great way to get crooks off the street, right?
Oh, but no! According to activist Jedidiah Brown, this action “obliterated” any progress Chicago police may have made with the folks in the ‘hood. And then the ACLU of Illinois jumped on the bandwagon, too, along with academics from Chicago area universities. I’m pretty sure none of those folks live in Englewood.
So Norfolk Southern apologized for the bait trucks, saying that they “eroded trust between law enforcement and the community.”
Now one big reason why the bait trucks were set up was not only because of frequent thefts from locked containers and trailers in Englewood. It was also because some of those trailers carry guns and ammunition, which end up in the local community. Which has lots of shootings. And you and I both know that criminals don’t really care how they get their guns, do they?
But, here’s the complaints:
“If you’re in a community with nothing to do and no money, what do you expect?” Oh, I dunno, maybe don’t break into the damn trucks??
Now in case you’re wondering about the Englewood neighborhood, let me tell you that it’s the third worst neighborhood in Chicago. Property crime, for example, is more than twice the national average per 100K people. Violent crime is nearly ten times the national average. And so far this year, Englewood has had 27 homicides, making it one of Chicago’s most deadly ‘hoods.
But never mind all that — it offends some Chicago aldermen and activists, who are eager to shout ‘racist!’
Now here’s a black man who finds this kerfuffle to be completely ridiculous. I don’t know who “The Amazing Lucas” is, but he makes more sense than any alderman or ACLU type:
So let’s review here. In Chicago on Friday night someone shot and wounded two teenage boys and a twelve-year-old girl. One of the boy’s mothers said that “even I’m scared to walk to the corner store.” An 18-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman were shot and later died. Guess what? No arrests have been made.
And that’s after last weekend’s carnage where 74 people were shot, and 12 died.
But those bait trucks. Man, they’re the most racist things ever.
From Second City Cop (the only believable insight into policing in Chicago)
“Almost immediately after Kim Foxxx dropped all charges against the burglars who cut open truck trailer seals in order to unlawfully loot whatever was within, Norfolk Southern acquiesced to the criminal class and agreed to allow their trains to be looted with impunity: The Norfolk Southern Railway apologized on Friday for its controversial “bait truck” operation in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood and said it wouldn’t use the tactic again.”

And there in the first sentence is the real problem in Chicago, Foxx and the courts refuse to put almost anyone in jail. And so the city, which I loved as a young guy, continues its descent to third world (or worse) status.
Nice job, Rahm.
Yep, if you don’t actually police your community it will, eventually, turn into a very, very bad place.
But, the locals need to stand up for their community, too. You’re a free citizen, with all the responsibilities that entails. Which means not just tossing your problems onto the police. Take your community into your own hands.
(Personally, I would work to secede from the city and form my own gov’t in the community, and self-police. Yes, armed. Make them search out greener pastures elsewhere. Of course, gangsters don’t like you to leave “The Family”, so Rahm and gang would probably prevent it.)
The Chicago cops are doing a great job, bob
Obama’s city. Say long goodbyes to morality. Oh, ya think we give every black women a shotgun instead and that you’ll have a dramatic drop in crime? Oh well can’t trust a black women to do the right thing can ya creeps? Between Planned Parenthood and the liberal’s gun control impulse, that community is dead. Who will move into those once glorious neighborhoods instead? Promises promises, ya’ll are now destroying one of the best parks in Chicago, Jackson Park, for the sake of honoring a genocidal half bred communist. He must really loathe some part of himself. We, on the other hand….please may we have another police man?
they “eroded trust between law enforcement and the community.”
Uh, no. YOU PEOPLE erode trust between law enforcement and the “community”. (I’m betting most of the non-racist people in that community trust the cops just fine. The morons who believe your tripe? Not so much.)
One of the boy’s mothers said that “even I’m scared to walk to the corner store.”
Well, maybe if you’d let the cops lock up people who do things like cut off the locks on a truck and steal sh*t from it you would end up being LESS AFRAID!
A good portion of these people have a real problem understanding cause-and-effect. *smdh*
(Note, with a lack of context, I don’t know if the woman quoted is one of the idiots or not. But, sadly, given other incidents, the odds are against her. However, the above is a generic rhetorical statement, not a specific accusation against her.)
Oh, and I meant to say: Kudos to that young man in the video. He gets his message across well.
I don’t see anything wrong with a ‘bait’ truck to nab criminals. After all criminals are not very bright people anyway and they are, uh, criminals so who really cares?
I remember a sting operation we conducted in my local PD. It was close to Christmas. So what we did was to get a list of all the warrants that were still outstanding and sent the person a letter that they had won a prize from the city and to claim it all that was necessary was for them to go to the PD station and ask for it.
I was amazed, we arrested almost 100 before noon. The prize? A trip to the county jail where they were booked into custody.
Did they whine and say it was unfair? Absolutely. But their whimpering fell on deaf ears.
Great news source
Precedent: Eddie Murphy in Beverly Hills Cop selling cigarettes out of the back of a “bait” truck.
Albeit, that was a movie and the city was Detroit. But, close enough.
Yeah but what’s the penalty for being caught stealing shoes? Some of these ghetto rats have 20 or 30 felony arrests for everything from burglary to murder and they’re still on the street, charges dropped or a slap on the wrist.
