Last night was a big night for primaries. Around the country, people were tuning in to see these results, because many think that this could be a foreshadowing of the midterm elections come November. So, what were the results?
- Democrat Mark Critz handily defeated Republican Tim Burns in a special election for Murtha’s seat. Many conservatives will take this as a blow. Had Burns won, it would have struck fear into the heart of Democrats everywhere. It would have been as momentous a victory as Scott Brown’s was when he won in Massachusetts. However, Murtha crony Mark Critz won, and a lot of Republicans are acting as if this is some sort of death knell.
I think that’s an overreaction. We have to remember, this district is registered Democratic, 2-1. Murtha held this seat for forty years. It wasn’t going to be an easy win, and we need to remember that.
Also, Burns will be able to get another crack at Critz in November. That’s months of momentum and campaigning we have to help win this seat. So don’t despair yet, keep supporting Burns. We may win Murtha’s seat yet.
- Joe Sestak defeated backstabber Arlen Specter, 54% – 46%. Specter’s run was a joke to begin with, but he had the entire Democratic establishment behind him. The DSCC endorsed him and he was an incumbent with the backing of Barack Obama. Obama, by the way, is now 0-4 with candidates he endorses. The good news is that Benedict Arlen is now gone, gone, gone. Everyone, Democrat or Republican, can rejoice about that, I think. The bad news is that Sestak will surely be more difficult for Pat Toomey to defeat.
- Blanche Lincoln just barely edged out Lt. Gov Bill Halter, 45% – 43%. This isn’t enough to avoid a run-off, though, which is good for the GOP. The longer they have to duke it out, the better it is for Republicans. This state seems to be a win-win for Republicans anyhow. Lincoln’s overwhelmingly unpopular, and Halter is considered too liberal to win.
- Finally, Rand Paul was victorious in Kentucky, defeating establishment Republican Trey Grayson. This should serve as a warning for GOP incumbents as well. This election, it won’t just be Democrats getting thrown out. The beltway establishment GOPers who have long since stopped listening to their constituents aren’t wanted anymore, either. Plenty of Republicans — like Mitch McConnell, John McCain, and John Cornyn — are completely out of touch with voters back home. They run to the right at election time and then go right back to their RINO ways once reelected. Voters are fed up with these RINO establishment Republicans, and Rand Paul’s victory shows that GOPers need to be nervous about November, too.
