So the Obamas, Joe Biden, and their Chicago crony pal Valeria Jarrett all traveled to Copenhagen to try to convince the International Olympic Committee to let Chicago host the 2016 Olympics. This was apparently more important than less important issues like the ongoing situation in Iran, our steadily worsening economy, our growing mountain of debt, health care, the war in Afghanistan… President Obama could have been focusing on any of the above issues, but instead he chose to try to hawk Chicago for the 2016 Olympics? Well, those are some… interesting priorities.
So, Barack and Michelle rounded up their pals, Valerie Jarrett and Oprah Winfrey, and jetted off to Copenhagen. Valerie Jarrett said that Michelle’s speech would bring tears to our eyes — all she ended up doing was making people feel very awkward, as she shared a rather strange memory of her and her father watching the Olympics. (Was she lying, or was she still sitting on her father’s lap in her twenties?) The president himself also addressed the IOC, where he seemed to basically be saying that Chicago should be chosen simply because he was from there, and so is Oprah, and come on — isn’t that enough?? With the trusty TOTUS at his side, he gave a… er… moving speech:
So, according to Barack Obama, Chicago is apparently a city of many contradictions. It’s a bustling metropolis — and a small town. It’s a place of diversity — but it’s also unified. Everyone there is different — but they’re all really the same. Uhh… OK.
Unfortunately, even the best efforts from the Obamas and from Oprah wasn’t good enough. The IOC dared to disobey Dear Leader Obama, and Chicago was voted out in the first round, with Rio de Janeiro ultimately being chosen (good pick, IOC), embarassing the Obamas and causing this hilarious reaction from a CNN Obama fan:
Here’s the thing: for Obama to take the time off to journey to Copenhagen to bring the Olympics to America (again), he had better bring back the prize. And he didn’t. But even if he had, it would still have been an embarassment. There was no reason for him to go to begin with, and there were certainly more important things for him to be worrying about. The unemployment rate rose to 9.8%, for example. He was the first president to ever do this, and he failed, so its doubly embarassing. It was also a colossal waste of taxpayer dollars in an already fragile economy. And he did it only because it was his hometown, a moment for his personal glory. Would he have jetted out to Copenhagen to plead for Houston or Nashville (or any other city) to get the 2016 Olympics? Uh, probably not. Mayor Daley called Obama, who then flew to Europe to do a favor for the corrupt Chicago political machine and it didn’t work. David Axelrod was so upset, he started griping about the “international politics” that robbed Chicago of the games. Someone needs to let Obama and Axelrod know that it wasn’t international politics — it was that no one has been there to keep Obama’s ego in check, and Obama figured that the IOC would just bend over for him the way the press does here in the US. And Chicagoans are so upset that they’re even blaming Michael Jordan, for cripe’s sakes.
Right, because if Michael Jordan had gotten off his lazy butt and gone to Copenhagen too, then surely Chicago would have won, or something.
Even the New York Times could figure out that this was a bad move for Obama, especially since he went into the IOC with his usual swagger and bravado as if he’d already won the games and it was all just a matter of getting the stupid vote over with.
What it really is, as Ed Morrissey pointed out, is a microcosm of the entire Obama presidency. Obama had no understanding of the situation and took only the information given to him by his corrupt political cronies. Meanwhile, he simply assumed his “world’s biggest celebrity” status would be able to allow him to just glide on by without having any understanding of the situation, and only when he failed did he try to get a better understanding of it all. He didn’t try to look to how it may have been handled in the past or even try to find out whether or not the Olympics would be a good thing for Chicago (probably not).
Obama’s Olympic embarassment is basically a metaphor for his entire presidency.
Ok, can we now knock off all this Obama = Hitler crud? Hitler was able to deliver the Olympics to Germany. mmmm mmmm mmmm
I predicted this would happen as soon as I heard about his little trip. The results have been absolutely hilarious.
It was foolishly inappropriate for someone of his stature to try, and foolish to believe that it would necessarily end up any differently.
And it cost the US taxpayers tons, even more than Mr. Big Spender’s date nights. The symbolism involved in this President’s extravagant waste during an extreme recession is pretty painful.
But hey, at least he spoke to McCrystal about Afghanistan for 25 minutes en route…25 whole minutes…yeah, I think it’s pretty crappy too.
Hmmm…..
“And on CNN, a Chicago sports voice many in the Windy City had longed to hear: former Chicago Bulls star Michael Jordan.
“I’m as stunned as anyone else,” Jordan said.”
How is this critical of Jordan? This is from the link you provided. I read far down in the article because I just couldn’t believe Chicagoans would be critical of Jordan, their hero of heroes.
So all that international good will your election generated, what good exactly is it?
If it doesn’t cause any real benefits to materialize then why should we care what other countries think of us?
JerryT,
Try reading a little farther down next time:
“People blamed negative media attention on the bid and former Chicago Bulls star Michael Jordan’s lack of participation as reasons for the loss.”
BobV,
“If it doesn’t cause any real benefits to materialize then why should we care what other countries think of us?”
In a nutshell, we shouldn’t, but no doubt we will.
