A year ago at CPAC 2022, I saw Mike Pompeo at the venue scooting around and thought “He is going to run for President”. He was on one of those knee scooters after surgery, but what was more remarkable he had lost a LOT OF WEIGHT. As I write this, he is on Sean Hannity with former DNI Ratcliffe. I don’t believe he is running for VEEP, I think he wants the ball as Quarterback.

I don’t know if Mike Pompeo is Presidential material or electable, we shall see. I do like him. He seems authentic, unlike, say, Mike Pence who makes my skin crawl, sorry, not sorry. Pompeo graduated first in his class from West Point in 1986. We haven’t had an Army grad President since Dwight D. Eisenhower. He did his required Army service for five years as a Tank Platoon Leader. Went to Harvard for his law degree and was an entrepreneur with some West Point classmates. Here is a real treat Mike Pompeo has a freshly minted First Lieutenant being interviewed about being the Outstanding Cadet at West Point:

Ah yes, the requisite Political Action Committee, CAVPAC. Working to get others elected gives you the juice to get elected.

Let’s be honest, Mike Pompeo may have been a hard charger but he was just another Congresscritter from Kansas when President Donald Trump spotted the talent. Trump first made Pompeo the CIA Director and then upgraded him to Secretary of State and Pompeo totally rocked it. No Hillary Clinton or John Kerry was he.

Next up on the Presidential Run check list is a book. “Never Give An Inch” is Pompeo’s contribution. Here from the Guardian are snippets of the book review:

Mike Pompeo is prescient, at least. Back in 2016, as a congressman, he warned Kansas Republicans of the danger posed by Donald Trump. Pompeo lamented that the US had already endured more than seven years of “an authoritarian president who ignored our constitution” – meaning Barack Obama – and cautioned that a Trump presidency would be no different.
“It’s time to turn down the lights on the circus,” he said.
Pompeo is an ex-army captain who graduated first in his class at West Point. But in the face of Trump’s triumphs, he turned tail and sucked-up. Pompeo was CIA director then secretary of state. On the job, his sycophancy grew legendary.
“He’s like a heat-seeking missile for Trump’s ass,” a former ambassador recalled to Susan Glasser of the New Yorker.
Never Give an Inch is Pompeo’s opening salvo in his bid for the Republican presidential nomination. On cue, he puckers up to Trump, the only declared candidate so far, and thanks Mike Pence, a likely contestant, for bringing him into the fold. But where others are concerned, Never Give an Inch doubles as a burn book.

Talk about burn. Ouch!

Last night, Cal Thomas posted an interview in the NY Post with Mike Pompeo about the Chinese Spy Balloon and the Presidential Trial Balloon:

Say the words “espionage” and “Communism” to a younger generation, and they might think you’re talking about spy novels and Cold War history.

Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo thinks both words describe contemporary threats. During a visit to a town made famous by the 1948 film starring Humphrey Bogart, Edward G. Robinson, Lionel Barrymore and Lauren Bacall, Pompeo told me he believes the balloon incident is a test by Chinese leader Xi Jinping, who he believes will say to himself, “My gosh, if they’re not going to stop a balloon over their country, they are certainly not going to stop me from invading Taiwan.”

The balloon was shot down Saturday off the South Carolina coast, a day after our meeting.

Pompeo thinks data from the balloon, which flew over US missile silos in Montana, was likely transmitted back to China. Speculating about bringing it down, assuming it came down in one piece, he said, “We will know how they transmitted it and what band of energy they were using to transmit it.”

Okay, that is such an Engineer thing to say. More:

Pompeo believes the only approach to China must be a strong one. He relates a story when he was secretary of state about calling in the Chinese ambassador and telling him to shut down his consulate in Houston within 72 hours because, he said, the Chinese were conducting espionage activities from the building. After the ambassador denied the allegation, Pompeo said he returned to his office and soon heard a TV report that said, “The Houston Police Department sees smoke at the Chinese consulate. The fire department is responding to flames.”
