I was old enough to go with the men to meet the train at Gathering. As it rolled to a stop, I could see the grey men counting us. Gramp moved next to me, chin uplifted toward them.
“They thought us wiped out, Reconciliation Day. The celebrations they set up & thought we all attended.”
“Now they are wary of any new man at Gathering,” I finished. “And never seeing our women makes it worse.”
The cities needed grain and livestock. We needed finished goods and when trade finished, the train moved on. We stood watching until it faded away.
