A quote: “There was a long hard time when I kept far from me the remembrance of what I had thrown away when I was quite ignorant of its worth.” ― Charles Dickens, Great Expectations
I’ll start with a story …

I thought I’d lost it when I was forced out … I mean, relocated, to Greater Angeles Diego. I wasn’t given much time after my wife died. You should know. The law now is that 1 person, one bedroom and that at the government’s choosing.
They showed up right after the funeral with the assigned boxes, hurried me to finish packing and hustled me onto the transport, locking up my … no … their property.
I took this picture of her, back in the day of homes, yards, cars, kids, and dangerous freedom.
We gave that up and are damned.

Now, it’s your turn.

I walked up to her while she leaned against the microbus. Her face had a wry smile on it that was all the answer I needed.
“I don’t have much,” I said. “Just the bus and what’s on my back.”
She nodded. “If that was important, I wouldn’t be here.”
“Everyone thinks you’re making a mistake in leaving with me.”
She stood up and shrugged. “About seven hours to Laughlin, we get married and head East, right?”
I looked from the old picture and back to my parents. “You guys eloped on a whim?”
“Worked out, didn’t it?” mom replied.
“Is that your van?” I ask her.
“Sure is,” she says.
“What are you doing in Mexico?”
“Trying to get home.”
“Where’s ‘home’?” I ask.
“Seattle.”
“Did you drive all the way here by yourself?”
“No, my friend Marge was with me. We took turns driving.”
“Where is she now?”
“Back in Seattle. She got sick yesterday. Her parents wanted her home, so I put her on a flight last night.”
I say. “Let’s get going.”
“Can you drive a stick-shift?”
“Yep.”
“Can you speak Spanish?”
“Sí, señorita.”
“Good!”
“Vámonos, but do you mind first buttoning up your shirt?”
