For the latest in Democrat hissy fits about American citizens having the audacity to come to townhalls and passionately voice opinions that Democrats don’t agree with, check this out:
Senior White House adviser David Axelrod and deputy chief of staff Jim Messina told senators to focus on the insured and how they would benefit from “consumer protections” in the overhaul, such as ending the practice of denying insurance based on preexisting conditions and ensuring the continuity of coverage between jobs.
They showed video clips of the confrontational town halls that have dominated the media coverage, and told senators to do more prep work than usual for their public meetings by making sure their own supporters turn out, senators and aides said.
And they screened TV ads and reviewed the various campaigns by critics of the Democratic plan.
“If you get hit, we will punch back twice as hard,” Messina said, according to an official who attended the meeting.
… “They are just helping us understand the fringe that is trying to mess up our meetings,” said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.).
They’ll “punch back twice as hard”?? These are American citizens — their constituents! It’s one thing to go after your political opponents, but to say you’re going to attack American citizens just because they don’t like your policies and have the nerve to say so is extreme. It’s extreme and it’s wrong. What these Democrats are complaining about is free speech, pure and simple. For the past eight years, Democrats protested just as loudly and obnoxiously as Republicans are protesting now, except the Democrats actually did have machines behind them. One of them was MoveOn.org! Democrats can pass any legislation right now that they wanted to, provided that they simply stay unified. Republicans can shout and yell and stamp their little feet all that they want, but Democrats can still pass any legislation that they want to pass. They have the majority. Yet they’re still blaming Republicans for their problems in passing legislation! What happened to “we won”?
Message to Democrats: the reason you can’t pass legislation is because it’s bad legislation, legislation that Americans don’t want passed, and you’re terrified that you won’t get reelected. It’s that simple.
Oh, and a quick word to Harry Reid. The protestors showing up at townhalls across the country are NOT “the fringe”. That’s the majority, bucko, like it or not. The majority of Americans don’t want your health care reform, so my advice to you would be to drop it if you want to be reelected. And ridiculing your constituents as angry mobs, Nazis, brown shirts, etc., will also not help your meager reelection chances, either.
They have all the votes they need to enact any kind of legislation that they want. And yet they’re still complaining because they don’t have the full complicity of the American people. Shockingly, citizens do not all think exactly the same way as Democrats in Congress do, and Democrats are furious about it.
Assholes.
Hat Tip: Hot Air
I get a laugh out of this. The GOP running a top-down protest movement? If only it were that easy… The thing the Dems don’t get is that the Republican leadership is at best lukewarm on the tea parties and health care protests. The GOP Washington leadership rolled over on cap-n-trade, and they were all set to do the same on health care before the rank and file found their spines (and got support from the Blue Dogs).
Remember, it’s not “Health Care Reform” anymore.. now it’s “Health Insurance Reform.”
When you’re losing support as people see the reality, try changing the name to try to confuse people into believing you.
Threatening protesters, denouncing them as fringe mobs, and organizing counter protests from the top to stifle dissent.
Hmm, all this sounds like things they spent the last 8 years accusing the right of doing. I wonder if next they’ll declare anyone who protests the government must be terrorist and should be sent to gitmo.
