Dozens of German politicians have tabled a new law to extend voting rights to babies, toddlers, children and teenagers.
The bill, which has won the cross-party backing of some heavyweight German politicians, would wipe away decades of “exclusion” and “discrimination” against minors, according to its supporters.Currently the voting threshold in Germany is 18, with an exception in some states, where 16-year-olds are allowed to cast a ballot.
But that does not go far enough for the new law’s backers, who want to ensure voting rights from cradle to grave. If the bill gets adopted, babies will have the same powers to voice their opinion on government handling of macro-economic performance in a global downturn enjoyed by their parents.
Toddlers will be able to take a stand on issues such as whether German armed forces should be deployed abroad.
According to the head of the liberal Free Democratic Party traditional coalition partner of Chancellor Merkel’s CDU party the constitutional change would enfranchise 14 million people.
“Unfortunately in Germany, 17 per cent of the population, namely the children and adolescent, are excluded from political decision making,” said FDP chief Dirk Niebel.
“This is a situation we cannot accept any longer. We generally have to pay more attention to their interests.” The law is proposed as part of a review of voting rights which its champions hope will be in force for the federal elections in Germany next year.
“The Constitutional Court has ruled that election regulations have to be reformed anyway, so we should take advantage of the occasion to enforce children’s right to vote,” he said.
History is not his side however, with a similar motion failing to win parliamentary approval in 2005.
So, apparently this is not the first time this idiotic idea has been tried. Who in the world thinks that a four-year-old can understand the complexities of foreign policy? And of course, it is the German liberals wanting to let toddlers and children vote. They have the same logic, reason, and decision-making capabilities, after all, so I guess it makes sense.
Hat Tip: Moonbattery
Better in Germany than here….
Liberals seem to want children to become adults, want adults to become children, want women to act like men, want men to act like women, claim conspiracy theories as proven fact and are pushing modern civilization to regress back to the stone age. They help and sympathize with felons as misunderstood, yet demonize law-abiding God-fearing men as hopeless/naive/ignorant. They proclaim free speech but force all to use only their select PC words (or I like to call it “Progressive Censorship”).
If we let US citizens under 18 vote, then our next President would be Wall-E or Dora the Explorer.
I honestly thought this was a joke when I first read. I actually cracked up when I read the comments on the toddlers’ “right to vote.” I’m sorry, I just got a mental image of election places with three year olds lining up to vote. I’m still laughing about this.
Oh, Cassy, I did see “Idiocracy” last week (I think it was on Cinemax) and I laughed my ass off throughout that whole movie. I’ve got to get that on DVD. In fact, the part about Brawno being used to fertilize the plants was hilarious.
In fact, here’s something I thought of: OBAMA, he’s what people crave…he’s got electrolytes!
I earnestly wish to apologize for the stupidity of my fellow Europeans. I thought I’d heard it all when I read that toddlers here in the UK were going to be monitored for racism if they said ‘yuk’ when confronted with a plate of curry, for example. Next thing to expect – 4 year-olds being given counseling because they don’t like carrots and someone’s interpreted that as meaning that when they’re 14 they’re going to bully anyone with red hair.
I know that you lot already pulled our fat out of the fire in WWII so I feel a bit cheeky for asking, but – could you please send a team of marines to deal with these insane NuLabour, EU and UN people who keep coming around to my house to lick my windows? Or would it be better if I just claimed asylum in the US?
Yep, consuling for the children.
Germany just doesn’t seem quite right without another “youth movement”.
I have to comment on the article you quoted (the link is down by now):
Nitpick: Dirk Niebel is not the chief of the FDP. He’s the secretary general.
Big mistake: He’s not saying toddlers should get the vote themselfes (yeah, it sounds funny bit we’re not that stupid). The idea is that until you are 16 your parents should vote for you at which point you take over. My opinion: While I certainly could use the extra 3 votes I don’t think I deserve them just by making 3 children (It’s not that hard).
So I’m not saying this is a good idea, but my point is that the article you quoted left out quite a crucial bit of information, either to make it sound more unbelivable or due to laziness/stupidity.
In my book that makes the Telegraph a very bad source for information.
And a clarification: German liberals are a lot closer to what you call libertarians than to the american liberals. Small government, low taxes, being responsible for yourself and all that.
An american liberal would probably feel the closest to his beliefs in the german social democrat pary. Big government, high taxes, lots of regulations and generally taking away from me and giving it to the lazy.
I enjoy reading this blog so far, so please take this as constructive criticism: Get your facts straight before posting stuff like this. It makes you look ignorant.
Also, I wonder if anyone’s going to read this, with the article being so old or if I just wasted quite a lot of time 🙂
