The UN Security Council held a meeting a few hours ago in New York to demand “an immediate and unconditional humanitarian cease-fire in Gaza.” As can be imagined, it was largely ignored by the Palestinians, who groused angrily that they had expected for the UN to condemn Israel and tell them to stop picking on the poor, defenseless Gazans.
“They should have adopted a resolution (a) long time ago to condemn this aggression and to call for this aggression to be stopped immediately to provide the Palestinian people with protection and to lift the siege against our people in the Gaza Strip,” Palestinian ambassador Riyah Mansour said.
Meanwhile, Israel responded with the calm, logical bluntness that we have come to expect.
Ron Prosor said the statement “miraculously managed not to mention Hamas, or rockets, or Israel’s right to defend its citizens.”
“The equation is simple –when it is quiet in Israel, it will be quiet in Gaza.”
So, it seems the UN’s involvement was wholly unnecessary, ineffective, and pointless. Kind of like its existence.
Who really expects the UN to do anything useful?
