More Benghazi-gate Coverup: Our Diplomats Denied Security?

Were multiple requests for additional security for Ambassador Stevens and other US Diplomats in Libya denied? Yes, according to House oversight committee Chairman Darrell Issa, R-Calif., and Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah. They’re pushing Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for more information on those additional security requests and other concerns in a blistering letter they sent to her today.

The Congressmen have detailed a string of attacks and other security “incidents” in Benghazi starting in April, and asked the State Department what measures it took to address the threat. They say that they have reports of “repeated requests” for additional security from the diplomats in Libya. If this is true, and it sounds like it is, this is not just incompetent but its also complicit.

“Based on information provided to the committee by individuals with direct knowledge of events in Libya, the attack that claimed the ambassador’s life was the latest in a long line of attacks on Western diplomats and officials in Libya in the months leading up to September 11, 2012,” they wrote. “In addition, multiple U.S. federal government officials have confirmed to the committee that, prior to the September 11 attack, the U.S. mission in Libya made repeated requests for increased security in Benghazi. The mission in Libya, however, was denied these resources by officials in Washington.”

Apparently this letter to Clinton lists at least 13 incidents that showed the deteriorating security situation on the ground there in Libya. They include:

April 6, 2012 – An IED is thrown over the consulate fence in Benghazi.

April 11, 2012 – A gun battle 4km from the Benghazi consulate.

April 25, 2012 – A US Embassy guard in Tripoli is detained at a militia checkpoint.

April 26, 2012 – A fistfight escalates into a gunfight at a Benghazi Medical University and a US Foreign Service Officer in attendance is evacuated.

April 27, 2012 – Two South African contractors are kidnapped in Benghazi, questioned and released.

May 1, 2012 – Deputy Commander of the local guard force in Tripoli is carjacked and beaten.

May 22, 2012 – RPG rounds are fired at the Red Cross outpost in Benghazi.

June 2012 – A pro-Gaddafi Facebook page posts photos of Ambassador Stevens making his morning run in the city of Tripoli and made a threat toward the Ambassador.

June 6, 2012 – An IED is left at the gate of the US consulate in Benghazi.

June 10, 2012 – RPG is fired at the convoy carrying the British Ambassador in broad daylight as he is nearing the British consulate in Benghazi. No one is killed but the British later close the consulate.

Late June, 2012 – Another attack on the Red Cross outpost in Benghazi, this one in daylight. The Red Cross pulls out leaving the US consulate the last western outpost in the city.

August 6, 2012 – Attempted carjacking of a vehicle with US diplomatic plates in Tripoli.

Weeks prior to Sept. 11, 2012 – Libyan guards at the Benghazi consulate are “warned by their family members to quit their jobs” because of rumors of a “impending attack.”

Hello?!? Those seem like real and substantive threats that warrant additional security to me.

So, the State Department says that Clinton plans to respond in writing to these three questions from Issa: Did the State Department know about all of the above attacks? What security arrangements were made in light of them? What requests did the Libyan Embassy make for additional security prior to September 11, 2012?

Issa is requesting answers by October 8th but why does it take a Congressional request to get this information? The families of the slain Americans in Benghazi want answers. Why are we not being told the truth about what happened to these four Americans? (hint: election 2012)

The Obama administration’s confusingly dishonest explanation of what happened in Benghazi on the anniversary of the Sept. 11th attacks and the days and weeks following, should not be setting well with any American. It’s more than shameful. Ambassador Stevens reported concerns that he was on an al Qaeda hit list. Within the past month, we have all seen the anti-American riots, flag burnings and the raising of Islamist banners atop our U.S. embassy facilities in too many countries and capitals to list.

Barack Obama, you suck on terror and foreign policy. And nearly three weeks after the attack, FBI agents sent to Libya to investigate have yet to set foot in Benghazi.

BTW, here’s a video of former SecDef Donald Rumsfeld about this situation this morning on Fox and Friends:
