Christmas Past is Always Present

Christmas Past is Always Present

Charles Dickens was onto something when he wrote “A Christmas Carol”. Whether Ebeneezer Scrooge was visited by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present or Yet to Be or whether as he said to Jacob Marley, his seven years dead former partner:

You may be an undigested bit of beef, a blot of mustard, a crumb of cheese, a fragment of an underdone potato. There’s more of gravy than of grave about you, whatever you are!

Ebeneezer Scrooge confronted by the ghost of Jacob Marley. Scrooge, 1951

The ghosts of the past are always present with us and anything can trigger a memory. A smell, a sound, an idiotic news item.

Victory Girls’ Jennifer Davis wrote about the Rockette who was being “forced” to perform for Donald Trump. I read that and become overwhelmed by memories.

Radio City Music Hall is one of the most beautiful theaters on the planet. Taking our son to see the Christmas Spectacular was as much for my husband and I as for our son. I love (present tense) the Rockettes. I love the whole show. The last act is the “Living Nativity”. Spectacularly costumed actors, live animals and “Hark the Herald Angels Sing”.

One year, we went to the 21 Club. At Christmas, the Salvation Army Band leads Christmas Carols at lunchtime at the 21 Club. After the singing, they pass the hat. We sat at Fred Trump’s table. Yes, the father of our President-elect had his own table at the 21 Club. There is a plaque that says so. Of course we visited the tree and the ice rink at Rockefeller Center. So quintessentially, New York at Christmas.
