Beyonce’s song “Single Ladies” was one of the biggest hits in recent years. There was a lot of talk about how the song lyrics were empowering for women, and when you added in the catchy beat and provocative music video, the song was destined to be a hit. Before we dive into the subject at hand, watch the official video for the single, for comparison purposes.
Now, watch this video. This is apparently from a competition called “World of Dance”, where nine-year-old girls performed to the same song. Shockingly, they make Beyonce’s dancing in the official video look tame and restrained.
It’s horrifying. The outfits, the dancing, the cheering as the girls grinded and danced suggestively… I feel bad for these poor little girls, oversexualized and not even ten yet. They are absolutely amazing dancers, clearly talented beyond their years. That much is without a doubt, but how could they have come to be dancing in such a way and wearing such skimpy costumes? Beyonce herself wore more than these girls did. Beyonce wore a black leotard; these girls wore lingerie-style black and red bikinis with thigh-high stockings and black tassles. They bumped, they grinded, they gyrated with their legs spread wide with nothing left to the imagination, and nothing held back. These girls took Beyonce’s video and her dancing and put it on steroids. And like I said, what’s sad is how unbelievably talented these girls are. Could their dance teacher not have come up with a more age-appropriate routine? Did none of the parents see a problem with this?
You would think, watching this, that the parents must somehow have missed this and that they would be outraged when they saw this. Not so. The parents defended it.
I don’t doubt that these girls worked extremely hard and don’t see a problem with their dance. How could they? They’re too young to know any better. That’s what parents are supposed to be there for, to guide and protect their children from being exploited in such a way. But apparently, these girls weren’t so lucky as to have loving parents who would protect their childhood and their innocence. These girls’ parents didn’t see anything wrong with it. They say that it’s at a dance competition, and that it wasn’t meant for a “worldwide audience”.
I’m curious. It may not have been meant for the world to see, but exactly what kind of audience is this appropriate for? It doesn’t make a difference if its in front of ten people or ten million. It’s inappropriate and it’s wrong. It was the responsibility of these parents to protect their daughters from this, and they failed. Miserably.
And as for being taken out of context? The entire dance video shows exactly what the dance routine was. There may have been other girls there the same age dancing just as inappropriately, but that just makes it worse, to think that there are scores of other little girls just as oversexualized and exploited. If these are the kinds of routines you see in that kind of environment, as the mother points out, then why on earth would you want your child in that kind of environment? If this is what dance costumes are these days, then why would you want your daughter involved? If this is what their daughters are dressing and dancing like now, then how will it be when they’re 16? As talented as these girls are, where can it possibly go from here if this is how they’re dancing and dressing now? It’s like the parents are setting the girls up for destinies as nothing more than the finest strippers at their local strip clubs.

UPDATE:
Well, I found a second video from three of the same girls in the dance troupe in the videos above. This time they’re dancing to “My Boyfriend’s Back”, and… well, it’s pretty much the same thing. Skimpy costumes. Thigh-high stockings. Suggestive, sexual dance moves. The “out of context” argument has been blown to hell now.
This is apparently the kind of dancing these girls do on a regular basis. This isn’t out of context at all; for these girls, it’s the norm.
These parents should be ashamed.
Eww
Cassy, thank you for posting these dance videos. Showed them to 7 year old daughter as examples of inappropriate dancing and costuming. She now sees what I have been “nagging” her about for the last few months!
I pulled my daughter, age 10, out of a class that wasn’t this bad. ewww doesn’t begin to express my disgust. My daughter continued in a different school that had the girls dancing in much more appropriate costumes and music. But the dancing is just as good. Parents MUST be vigilant, and vote with their money.
A while back a football coach friend of mine said “I think I’ve figured it out…like every dad wants his son to play quarterback, every mom wants her daughter to be a whore.”
He got a curious look from his [very high-quality] wife, and added “well maybe not every mom.”
From every status-building activity I’ve seen moms push their daughters into, I think he had a point.
Unbelievable that the parents actually excused and defended this! Looks to me that these girls have a choreographer/dance teacher who is exploiting them. Obviously, that person creates these sexual dances. It’s very disturbing watching them! Very sad. Little girls dressed like that, shaking and writhing the way they are- and if you watch it, that’s EXACTLY what they are doing! There is just no denying it.
I cannot believe that a father could watch his child dance like that, in those outfits, and not be OUTRAGED and appalled!! Something is seriosuly wrong with that father to see nothing wrong with his daughter in that dance!!
About the only funny part of “Couple’s Retreat” was Jon Favreau telling his barely-dressed daughter to reclothe, because “When you’re
living in my house, you’re a Taliban! Okay? You keep your body a secret. Except you get to, you know, go to school and read books”.
Maybe these girls need their fathers to take that to heart.
So the mom lets her daughter watch “kids movies” and “no MTV” ’cause she’s too young, yet she has no problem whatsoever with her daughter gyrating on stage in a skimpy costume!? Hello! Something is really wrong with this picture and that mentality!
These two parents are in total denial!! Think of all the perverted men who’ve now watched these little girls and gotten their jollies! Never in a million years would I let my daughters dance like that, in front of an audience, dressed like that, etc. Never!
The dad is a DWEEB! He says “when kids go swimming, they wear swimsuits.” Yes, BUT they are not ON STAGE in front of an audience and doing sexual moves! Pleaze!
Why are these parents defending this dance anyways? Seriously! Really makes you wonder!
On what planet does a parent believe that this is appropriate for a nine year old girl?
When their daughters get knocked up at 13 years old , they’ll wring their hands and wonder how it could have happened…gee moms…look back on You Tube. Free porn for pedophilles.
It’s child pornography. The parents should be shunned in polite society.
Someone should be burning up the telephone lines of Paul Mitchell’s PR–they are the sponsor most prominently displayed
Ugh, what’s next? It’s so wrong!
Noticed that the costumes are the same, the choreography is the same, and the sexualized content is exactly the same.
They literally are being taught nothing that will serve them in the dance world except climbing the pole.
I have a five year old little girl who loves to dance. If anyone tried to make her dress/dance in such a way, I’d put them in a body cast.
I do not understand how the parents defend this action. Reminds me of seeing a seven to eight year old girl at the mall wearing a t-shirt with the caption “Juicy” on it. I wanted to waterboard her mother right then.
.. Disturbing.
I’m sure there are quite a few pedos masturbating to these clips. Why dangle the cape in front of the bull if you don’t want him to strike?
If a district attorney found this on an accused sex criminal’s computer it would be entered as evidence.
The only context that has been removed is that the kids are from L.A., home to many of the countries most notable idiots, and ‘starlets’ who need lessons on how to discreetly exit a vehicle. In the context of Hollywood this really is mild.
Babylon lives. Gommorah is reborn, with Sodom just a few hundred miles north.
Is this dance school owned and/or financed by pedophiles?
I’m sure there are several child predators bookmarking these videos on YouTube and thanking the Dark Side that parents as clueless and careless as these actually exist; they certainly make it easier for these losers to find provocative videos and photos of young girls.
And my mom wouldn’t let me leave the house in a t-shirt she considered too tight when I was junior high . . .
I had to turn off that clip after 30 seconds. I feel creepy just watching it. I don’t have kids but I cannot believe the parents’ flimsy defense for this kind of behavior. No child of mine would ever be involved with something like this. Where is the parental responsibility??
And yes, call the sponsors that back this kind of crap. Hit them in the wallet, that is probably the only way to get through to some companies that support this kind of ‘entertainment.’
I depply recent the comments made that everyone woman wants her daughter to be a whore made by Topher. I ahve seen dance classes my kids were in 10 yrs ago were this type of dancing was acceptable. At frist is was shocking but when you realize these kids are talented and hving fun, what is the big deal? I think the people watching might have questionable thoguths racing through there heads. Wanna looks for pedaphils, most are family members. I think they did a fabulous job.
One last thought, you might want to pay more attention to what is going on at your local elementary school and middle school. You think this is shocking, you are in the dark ages-find out what is going on at school then complain about this control dance competition.
