President Bush lifts offshore drilling ban

It’s about time:

The White House says President Bush is planning to lift an executive ban on offshore oil drilling.

In a Rose Garden statement on Monday, the president plans to lift the ban. But by itself, the move will not lead to more drilling off America’s coastline.

Congress must still lift its own legislative ban before offshore drilling can happen.

No need for celebrating yet, though. With Nancy “Pioneer” Pelosi & Co., it’s highly unlikely that any action will be taken. This new Freedom’s Watch ad sums it up well:

Not only is Congress not allowing domestic drilling, they’re not offering any other solutions. They’re just sitting around doing nothing, letting Americans suffer. We’re at least one step closer now, but waiting for Congress to take action to relieve the pain at the pump is like waiting for the Obamamessiah to be frank about what exactly he stands for.

I wouldn’t exactly say they are doing nothing. I’ve heard a lot of U.S Mayors are railing against all the “dirty oil” we have here in Alberta and are organizing a boycott. Boy, that will get the USA closer to breaking the grip of foreign oil. Yeah, were foreigners up here I suppose but as your well-being is tied closely to our own I cannot figure this one out. China and India are both screaming for oil and anything we do not send to our US brothers/sisters will go there. If the oil is burned in the third world does it emit less?

I suspect during the interim between the 2008 and 2010 elections, the economy will take a bad nosedive because of the high energy prices. With any luck, the Democrats will get blamed for it (especially if Obama gets in this November.) After the 2010 midterm elections, we’ll be at the reverse of where we are now – a Democrat (or Republican-lite) president and a nominally GOP congress, with someone other than Pelosi in the Speaker’s chair. At that point, the Republicans (who already support drilling) will finally have the votes to get something done.

At least, that’s what I’m hoping. In the meantime, look forward to fuel costs rising even higher as the Democrats in Congress will continue to make excuses for inaction.

Question: What is our response to their, “The oil companies already have leases they aren’t using” excuse?

Normally, Congress doing nothing is a Good Thing (TM). In this case, getting the hell out of the way of the US economy would be the best thing they could do.

Good job, Mr. President. It is certainly a step in the right direction. I would really cheer if Congress lifted the ban and added a provision with immunity from environmental lawsuits for oil exploration efforts.

But, I think there is a better chance of the Iranian Mullahs of converting to Christianity than Congress lifting the ban. I do hope that I am wrong, though…

  • Sisyphus says:

Congress “doing nothing” is quite intentional.

Democrats want people hurting. It is their desire that the average American struggle financially. Democrat rejection of drilling for more oil keeps gas prices high, which leads to an increase in hurt. Why do all this?

Once American people are hurting financially, then the Super Dems can fly in and make all sorts of promises to the (economically illiterate) American people.

Dems hope by that point that voters (i.e., uninformed citizens) will associate Bush and Republicans with high gas prices (even though Bush’s demand to drill would help things). By November, the indoctrination by the mainstream media mafia should be complete and people will vote en masse for the very people who got them into the gas mess in the first place.

You republican Nazis are totally brainwashed, but I guess that wouldn’t take much soap or water. Ya, more offshore drilling that will solve all our energy problems. Oil drilling operations take YEARS before they go on line and start producing…it isn’t going to solve anything..all it does is give the oil companies more power and more ability to influence the global economy. Why don’t they try drilling in the thousands of acres they already have the rights to drill on, but don’t. Why don’t they spend some of the billions of dollars of profits to improve the 30 year old refineries that they inefficiently operate to produce a price inflated product. The truth is sadly that the entire 8 years of the Bush presidency has driven this country to the edge of a cliff, and now just before we all go over the edge, that idiot we reluctantly call our leader has to work just a little bit harder to increase wealth for himself and all his rich oil baron friends by passing legislation that benefits their corporate bottom line. I bet you dummies all believe in the frigging tooth fairy too! I don’t care who gets elected , as long as “w” goes back to jerkwater Texas and clears brush for the rest of his life…a job he is ultimately perfect for.

Sisyphus: What you posted is something which, I am afraid, too many Americans just refuse to even consider. There are voices, such as Chuck Colson and Phil Gramm, sounding the alarm about what “Liberals” are really doing, but it seems that they are not taken very seriously even by some in our camp.

  • Cylar says:

Wow, what a virtual smorgasbord of tired cliches and stereotypes. Oh, where to start…

You republican Nazis are totally brainwashed, but I guess that wouldn’t take much soap or water.

Here we go. I know having the group I identify politically, referred to as “brainwashed” and “Nazis” always makes me sympathetic to the speaker’s position.

Ya, more offshore drilling that will solve all our energy problems.

Oh, so you’re one of those “can’t drill our way out” folks. Right. You can’t eat your way out of hunger, or drink your way out of thirst, either.

Oil drilling operations take YEARS before they go on line and start producing…

Mmhmm. Makes you wish we’d gotten started on this back in 1995 when Clinton first vetoed the idea, doesn’t it? But you know what they say…the sooner we start….

it isn’t going to solve anything..all it does is give the oil companies more power and more ability to influence the global economy.

It will solve the problems of an energy shortage and the high prices we’re seeing. The rest of what you’ve said here is debateable.

Why don’t they try drilling in the thousands of acres they already have the rights to drill on, but don’t.

Gee, why didn’t THEY think of that? Drill on land they already control! Wow! Maybe because there isn’t any oil on those lands, or at least not enough recoverable barrels worth the enormous cost of putting up a rig, getting all the gazillions of permits. They leased the land for exploration – had to do this before they could even look there. Oil is where you find it; you don’t find it just anywhere. plus fighting dozens of lawsuits filed by environmentalist wackos.

Why don’t they spend some of the billions of dollars of profits to improve the 30 year old refineries that they inefficiently operate to produce a price inflated product.

Wow…why didn’t they think of that either? NEWS FLASH…that’s precisely what they’ve been doing! The federal government hasn’t allowed any new ones to be built since 1976, so they’ve tried to increase output at existing ones.

You want to blame someone for high energy prices? Forget the oil companies. Blame Greenpeace, the Sierra Club, et al for their ceaseless meddling in the name of “protecting the planet.” And in turn, blame Congress for listening to those idiots.

Wow. More tired cliches we’ve been hearing before Bush even ran for president. He’s supposedly SO stupid and has been SUCH a disaster for the country, but he keeps beating the pants off your guys. What does that say about them, hmmm?

I bet you dummies all believe in the frigging tooth fairy too! I don’t care who gets elected , as long as “w” goes back to jerkwater Texas and clears brush for the rest of his life…a job he is ultimately perfect for.

I don’t believe in the tooth fairy, but I do believe that Bush Derangement Syndrome (and you’re a classic case of it) will ultimately drive the nation to utter financial ruin. Among other things, it refuses to recognize that the growing energy demand of a developing world (both here and in former-3rd-world countries like India) requires a growing energy supply in order to avoid skyrocketing costs…which we’re now seeing. Did you know that domestic US oil production has actually fallen by 40% in the last 30 years?

Assuming you are even out of high school, did you take Econ 101? Maybe you should go do that instead of calling people names.

If only BDS were painful. If….only.
