The Prank Heard Round the World

A wannabe social media influencer played a prank on a worker for clicks and found out the hard way that a guy who actually works for a living has zero patience for tone-deaf attention whores.

The Incident

Walt Zerod, whose job it is to stock stores with Red Baron products, was approached by online prankster Carter Robert Porter. Porter interrupted Zerod’s work to ask him for the time, and when Zerod pulled his phone out to check, Porter pointed his own phone at Zerod’s and triggered the pre-recorded sound of an ApplePay transaction, then thanked Zerod for “giving” him $10.00. All this was recorded on a pair of eyeglasses fitted with a hidden camera. What happened next is a master class in FAFO.

Zerod tried explaining to the kid that he didn’t have time for this crap, and when the kid gave him nothing but attitude, Zerod walked off to report him to management. It could have ended there, but Porter apparently FOLLOWED Zerod, still recording, and told him, “Thanks for the $20.00.” That’s when Zerod lost ALL of his cool and invited Porter to come with him outside.  Only THEN did Porter belatedly try to de-escalate the situation, explaining that it was just a joke and that “It’s not that deep.”

What Zerod said to this kid, voice shaking with unshed tears of frustration, resonated with anyone who’s ever had to work hard for a living:

No, it’s not a joke to me, okay? I don’t have time for this in my life. My life is hard enough as it is, okay? I don’t need this! I got kids at home that went to bed without me right now! And I was supposed to be at home an hour ago, and I’m still out here working! And I gotta get up at 5 in the morning and do 10 more stores. So this is not a joke to me. And now I’m probably gonna get kicked out of the store because of you. Not funny! You’re probably making money off this. I can’t even pay my mortgage! And I got four kids at home! So not funny!

The Reaction

The public is outraged on Zerod’s behalf because we can relate to him. Many of us know what it’s like to work hard all day and sometimes all night while others raise our children. And what’s waiting for us at the end of all that work? What’s the reward, besides the privilege of getting up the next morning and doing it all again? It USED to be a slow climb out of poverty into self-reliance and a legacy for our kids, but what is it now? A greedy bureaucracy with its hand out perpetually, berating us for not giving them MORE, while the same influencer class that spawned people like Porter posts videos bragging about all the delicacies they just bought with their food stamps as the tax burden on the working class continues to rise. Our ancestors fought the Revolutionary War over a tax rate of 1.5%.  They would be turning over in their graves if they knew that the average worker these days pays 26%.

Zerod is such a sympathetic figure that the left and the right are in agreement on something for once:

The Aftermath

What happened next is becoming a very familiar series of events. Internet sleuths got to work, finding out the identity of the overworked dad and setting up a crowdfunding account which has so far raised over half a million dollars. He won’t have to worry about making his mortgage payments for the foreseeable future. He’s also not going to lose his job as he feared; Red Baron has jokingly nominated him “Employee of the Month.”

Another fun wrinkle in the story involves the guy who set up the crowdfunding account for Zerod.  Turns out, he’s a homeless veteran named Luke Okanshield and the crowdfunding account set up for HIM has generated over $9,000.00.  As much as I hate this “victimhood for profit” culture we currently find ourselves in, this case demonstrates that it’s not ALL bad.

As for Porter, he tried to completely scrub his internet presence, but the internet is forever. We now know that he’s been arrested for assault in his recent past (probably ANOTHER of his pranks gone wrong). I think his influencer career is probably over before it ever got off the ground.

Influencers are a cancer and beating them unconscious should result in police praising the attacker for doing a good job.

Credit to Red Baron though (By the way, it’s only one R as opposed to Trump’s son’s name.). They did not fire Walt and the humorous bit about employee of the month resonated well. That’s why my wife and I bought a few of their pizzas yesterday and many other people are doing the same.

Oh, good catch! I’ll fix that. I agree that these influencers are super annoying, but I felt a little sorry for the kid. I was kind of a dumbass too when I was that young. Hopefully he learns from it and becomes a better person.
