personally, i would want my children to learn the value of civics and education and how they work together — just not from a narcississtic socialist who’s stated interest is to fundamentally change america as we know it.
paula says: I’ve read the speech – Who knows if he will stay on the teleprompter and not interject more contentious political views? Glad my high school left it up to the teachers and they told me they “won’t waste valuable instructional time on this”.

The whole point of releasing the speech early was so that you WOULD know what he will say and to reduce the panic that people just like you with your inuendos create. I doubt if the President will say “come be a socialist with me!” All the fuss is just a manufactured food fight by you crazies.

Because my kids are in enough right mind to know that education and staying in school is very important without anyone having to tell them.
This is the type of thing that a kid should not be subjected to until they are old enough to decide for themselves which way in life they would like to go politically.
Its an attempt to stear them to a liberal direction by asking them to give sugestions how they could help the pres. If they were old enoug they might ask themselves “do I really want to help this schmuck”? So, we should wait til they are old enough to present that question to themselves.
All Obama is trying to do is create a favorable image of a democratic president for them to go forward in life with to dems advantage later, maybe Michelle in 2020
The president referred to himself 56 times, the country 4 and education 10 times. So you tell me – what was his priority in the speech? Cuz I don’t think it was about education.

it’s only an 18 min speech so its quite remarkable that obama mentions himself 56 times… but then he is The One.
and frankly its not the speech itself that was the problem for me. i want my children to respect the office of the president. its all the ‘pre-during-post’ lesson plans that concerned me.

I’m not “paniced” about the President speaking to school children. I have read the speech – it is rather innoucous, with a simple message for students to stay in school and work hard. I can get behind that message. In fact, my husband and I get behind that message all the time, so I guess my children are not the President’s intended target – My guess is he is intending to reach thousands of children who feel marginalized because their fathers left them, or they have no support systems. No. he will not be so blatant and say “come be a socialist with me”. And he knows he can never impress his political desires on right-thinking children who already have a system of support at home. But he will be able to sway marginalized children who have not yet decided if capitalism or socialism is right for them. These are the students he hopes to reach through his speech. He hopes his charm and persuasion will be remembered so that he can lay the foundation of a new generation of Democrats.
You should thank your lucky stars that there are still lots of conservatives in the country, Paul, because someone has to pay for all these entitlement programs…liberal-minded folks will take what they can get from the government without working. Conservative have jobs, pay their own bills AND carry all the freeloaders.

the problem will have little to do with the president’s speech, which even before the hoopla would probably have been fairly tame.
it is the activities which surround the speech that could be the problem in your specific school.
fortunately my school system is playing it low key.

My 14 year old watched cuz he was curious, wanted to do kind of a survey, and said that you’d have to be a neanderthal to not already know all that sh*t.
So I guess if you’re making your kids watch it, its because you’re a crappy parent and think you need someone to raise your kid for you ?

it was a non issue for me because in The One’s infinite planning, he really didn’t factor in west coast school start times. his speech was just when school was starting here. our school chose not to show the speech so i didn’t have to make any decisions there.
if they had, i would have allowed them to see it but i would provide the commentary and the punditry. 🙂
