Members of Congress can say nearly anything on the House Floor since they are protected from prosecution by the Speech and Debate Clause in the Constitution. Still, and even with the release of a draft of her speech, I was not prepared for the allegations that Nancy Mace enumerated in her speech last night at 7:00 p.m. Eastern Time. I am having trouble processing the violations that she outlined, as a very protected woman.
Miss Mace is protected in this speech by the Speech or Debate Clause of the U.S. Constitution. Still, it was very jarring. The Daily Beast had an early copy of the draft:
Rep. Nancy Mace is expected to use a House floor speech Monday evening to allege she felt “humiliated” and “violated” to learn she was videotaped “naked” without her knowledge.
The South Carolina Republican plans to detail how she obtained the video, according a draft of a 20-page prepared speech obtained by the Daily Beast.
Her planned address will include props—including a Bible, a small glass to symbolize “two small vodka sodas” she says she was served by an aggressor, and handcuffs, which she invites anyone who objects to her standing up for women to “take me to jail.”
“I saw a video of another woman who was naked, clearly on a hidden camera, unaware she was being filmed,” Mace says in her written speech. “That woman, she says, was “slender” with “long brown hair.”
“I turned up the volume to hear if there was audio,” she writes. “I heard my voice. I zoomed in on the video. The woman was me. I was in shock.
“I was horrified. I was humiliated,” her draft says. “I was violated.”
Speaking directly to the men who she says abused her and others, Mace, according to her prepared speech, plays to say: “You’ve booked yourself a one-way ticket to hell. Nonstop. No connections.
I read all of this and I still not prepared for the Congresswoman’s floor speech. It begins with her placing her hand on the Bible and swearing to tell the truth.
This crime’s about rape, non-consensual photos and videos. Underage women. Sex trafficking. One of the four faces, first on the left, is the face of Mace’s former fiancé. We last heard about him when he wanted to get busy before the Prayer Breakfast. Our Lisa wrote that up and you can read it here. Remember, first on the left.

I am probably overthinking this trying to process it, but maybe Nancy’s Prayer Breakfast admission was a cry for help, even if she didn’t know it. That’s one of the reasons it felt so inappropriate to us. Just one of the reasons.
Here is more from the Raw Story:
“Today I am going to free myself from the monster who broke me,” she reportedly plans to say, while laying her hand on a Bible.
The Bible is one of several props the South Carolina lawmaker plans to incorporate into her speech, which also includes “a small glass to symbolize ‘two small vodka sodas’ she says she was served by an aggressor, and handcuffs, which she invites anyone who objects to her standing up for women to ‘take me to jail,’” the report added.
I think the handcuffs were a mistake. More:
“If you film women naked without their knowledge, permission or consent, it’s called voyeurism and it is illegal,” Mace’s draft speech says. “When you and your business partners pay each other, and you’re sexually abusing women, you are by definition a sex trafficker.”
Where do men, and women, who exploit others this way even come from? After saying, “Let me be loud and clear, I would never allow any woman or underaged girl anywhere near any of you.”, she then went on to enumerate their crimes.
Mace accused the South Carolina Attorney General of not taking her accusations seriously. From the AP:
Mace accused South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson of slow-walking any investigation of Bryant and the other men after she brought the photos and video to state authorities.
“Did South Carolina’s attorney general have any of these predators indicted after being provided clear cut-and-dry evidence including video, photos and witnesses?” Mace asked, noting that her office had stood up a tip line for anyone with information on the allegations.
In a statement after Mace’s speech, Wilson’s office called her comments regarding the prosecutor’s conduct “categorically false” and said the office “has not received any reports or requests for assistance from any law enforcement or prosecution agencies regarding these matters.”
The statement from Wilson:
SC AG responds to Nancy Mace allegations that he did nothing when she went to him about her attack.

This is beyond disturbing. If one tenth of this is true, it is disgusting that nothing has been done and these men are walking around uncharged and free. If this is ALL untrue, Nancy Mace should be censured and shunned.
Finally, I would like to thank every single man who has ever been in my life for protecting me, especially my father, father in law and husband.

she brought the photos and video to state authorities.
“has not received any reports or requests for assistance from any law enforcement or prosecution agencies regarding these matters.”
Note the subtle wording here. The AG says he didn’t get anything from law enforcement or prosecution agencies. And the article doesn’t say that is who she gave the info to – it says “state authorities.” Specifically to whom did she give that information, and was it sent to the AG’s office? (Because Mace is neither LE nor part of a “prosecution agency.”) Is this a missed opportunity by Mace or a twisted defense by the AG? Or a way to spin things up further by the news?
This also seems to give some weight to her “no men-in-dresses in my bathroom” fight.
I do hope there are men in her life who are protecting her now. I have found lots of women who have NOT felt that kind of safety in their lives. That’s not how it should be.
I noticed the weasel words too GWB.. definitely something to look into.
