Jesus is the convenient prop or the blank slate totem, upon which many can project their own ideals and wishes. There is no revelation about Him at this point, no new questions answered or old questions confirmed. This is the perverse act of using Jesus to destroy Him.

Pish and tosh, some would say, no one is seriously trying to destroy Jesus or Christianity. Let’s leave aside the Muslims who are literally (in its dictionary definition) erasing Christianity by slaughtering Christians en masse, and come back to the reinvention of Jesus into not-Jesus.

This is where the latest salvos in the War on Christmas come in. It is no longer about shutting down any mention of Christ and The Reason for the Season. Not that they still don’t try, bless their shriveled little hearts. It’s that now ostensible Christian churches are out to make their political hobbyhorses into statues of Jesus, or baby Jesus.

On December 3, Father Vitaliano Della Sala, pastor of Sts. Peter and Paul in Capocastello, Italy, during an interview with a local television station, sparked widespread debate in the national press with his proposal to place in the Nativity scene a figure of a “baby girl Jesus,” described by the priest himself as a provocation meant to stimulate reflection on the role of women in the Church and on women’s access to the priesthood, while also calling into question the traditional theological understanding of the Incarnation.

Father Della Sella demonstrates quite clearly he is using Christ – and the Nativity – to subvert Christ. He’ll turn Jesus into a girl if it shakes up the old normies. It’s unjust, in his personal view, that women can’t be priests. So let’s all pretend He could have easily been a girl baby. Not.

First off, Jesus could not have incarnated as a woman and fulfilled the redemptive work necessary to save the souls of humankind. Adam introduced sin into the world when he took the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Yes, the serpent deceived Eve first and Adam took the fruit from her, but God placed the man as the head over Eve, so his failure to protect her from the serpent and his indulgence in sinful rebellion plunged humanity into darkness.

Since a man—the head of creation who represented all humanity—caused the fall, we needed a new and better Adam to succeed where he failed and redeem mankind. Jesus had to come as a biological male. No ifs, ands, or buts about it.

And it’s not like this is the good Father’s first blasphemous rodeo.

In 2023, the Italian priest presented a display in which two mothers were present at the side of the manger, one of whom donned a rainbow-colored veil. Della Sala told the press at the time that he “wanted to show with this scene that families are no longer just the traditional ones.

Jesus was born a Jew of the House of David and was born in Bethlehem, the former Jewish nation of Judea (ruled by the Roman client King Herod I), and was raised in Galilee, the former Jewish nation of Israel which were part of the Roman Empire. Just like Egypt was part of the Roman Empire when the Holy Family went there temporarily before traveling to Galilee. So even His basic story belies all the claims about what the real Jesus was like.

It appears we don’t need an authoritarian government to cut Christianity out of Christian Churches as Communist China does. We have the ideological Left doing it already on the altar of DEI.
