A quote: “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. It has to be fought for and defended by each generation.” ~~ Ronald Reagan

I’ll start with a story …

***************************

“Oh my goodness, let me get my high-heels off. My feet are killing me!

Now just you stop. I know you’re laughing at me. I mean, you warned me so many years ago that this would happen. I danced like a maniac – or just a crazy-happy mother – at our daughter’s wedding …

It was a beautiful wedding, wasn’t it? I remember it was the first thing you talked about at our first ultrasound when you found out “it’s a girl!” I laid there half-naked, watching the monitor and listening to her heartbeat and you were talking about where the wedding was going to be held …

And don’t think I didn’t see that tear roll down your face. You also went on and on about how your daughter was going to learn to camp and go to Yankee’s games with you.

Those Brooks Brothers suits were just camouflage, sweety.

You sent me white roses the next day and we made a lunch date in celebration at Windows On the World only a few floors above your office.

I was picking out what I would wear when I heard the news. A bright September morning gone, I was lost in the dark trying to reach you and reach you and …

Don’t be too sad for me, dearest. Our daughter gave me life, and I see you in her eyes every day. And you are real to her, I made sure of it. I even got to like baseball, and we’ve had season tickets to Yankee games for years.

And your daughter and new son-in-law are taking a part of their honeymoon in New York and there will be a new white rose by your name.

It really was a beautiful wedding, and I know you were there.”

***************************

Previously.

Note: More than 100 babies were born to the pregnant wives and girlfriends who lost their partners on 9/11.

Now, it’s your turn.

I want you to know that I have my flag out, and when I drove into town, my red, white, and blue ribbon was flying, not from my antenna because I don’t seem to have one anymore, but I caught the ribbon in my raised window! I cried all the way in and all the way back! That ribbon is 25 years old and as colorful as it was on that day! It’s been inside my cars, all of them , since that day!
This is not what you asked for here, Darlene, but I had to tell someone! Thanks, Victory Girl!

Leave a rose, light a candle, leave. That’s the order I do things in. I get strange looks from people, especially on the 25th anniversary but I simply don’t care. Let them have an audience.

I find myself at this Irish Pub that I went to when I figured out she was never coming back. That one guy is sitting there as if he’s expecting me and he even has a glass and a bottle of whiskey ready.

“You made it,” he said without preamble.

“I hate being here but it’s an important number.” I took a sip and was grateful that the TVs were not on.

    “Are you at peace?”

“Yes. I married a good woman who will never replace the one I lost but we made a family. But I have to ask something. Who are you? How do you know all these things?”

“My friend was there for her. I saw hatred poison you. What good is it being a guardian angel if you can’t help the soul in your care?”

After I finished my drink, I left. When I looked back, the bar was gone but I knew I wouldn’t need to see him any more.

Eight years and ever so much distance in paratime separate them. It’s the curse of transtemporal clairvoyance, that watching the videos of the horror that engulfed Lower Manhattan a decade before I was born should throw my consciousness across time to another horror in that same place, but unfolding differently.

Here, in our world, America was already involved in what historians call the Energy Wars, but we were still thinking in terms of nations fighting nations on a defined battlefield. To be sure, we should’ve been aware of how the game was changing after the Cowardly Blow, the terrorists attack on the Kremlin that broke the false peace at the beginning of the Energy Wars. But we still thought ourselves too far away — until an LP tanker sitting in New York Harbor exploded.

At first everyone thought it was a horrible accident, bad handling procedure like the Grandcamp down here in Texas. But it didn’t take long for the investigators to discover clues that pointed toward a deliberate act. Someone who wasn’t quite as fanatical about things as he thought, who decided those seventy-two hot babes could wait — and got picked up as he tried to slip through New Jersey, where his story unraveled right quick.

Over there, in that timeline, everyone thought the situation in the Middle East had been settled a decade ago, and carefully overlooked all the simmering hatreds, assuming the rhetoric from certain countries to be so much hot air. They learned otherwise that horrible morning, because it wasn’t just one strike. When the second plane hit the other tower, everyone knew they were looking at a deliberate act — which in an awful way was good for them, because they don’t have telepaths. They’ve found out since that there were several other teams out there that simply slipped away when the entire US airspace was shut down for civilian aviation.

Here, the issue was settled two years later, at the cost of three cities vanishing in artificial sunfire. Over there, things are still simmering, pressure building up like an old-fashioned riverboat with the pressure relief valve on its steam engine tied down. The bad guys keep the atrocities small enough for their enablers to cry about “disproportionate” responses. So US forces knock off a few rotten leaders and blow up some weapons sites, but stop short of actual victory.

What will it take to awaken the necessary resolve in that world’s America? Transtemporal clairvoyance is not precognition, and even that can only see the possibilities until decisive action breaks the amorphous mass of maybes into clear timelines.
