A quote: “If fear is cultivated it will become stronger, if faith is cultivated it will achieve mastery.” ~~ John Paul Jones

******************************

9 pm curfew, lights out at 10.

By 3 am the Safety Patrol has warmer places to be rather than in snowy streets looking for disrupters.

“Disrupter,” she snorts, thinking of her hidden sci-fi books, “I’m a raygun!”

The cardboard in her window is snug, a blanket hung over the door. She lights a candle and starts reading the most dangerous book she has in dangerous times.

“An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid …”

******************************

  • Sheila Garrett says:

The knock came at the back door.
Lights went out and a voice whispered in the darkness.
Boxes and bags were taken inside and examined in the light of a single candle. Vegetables, bacon, beef, milk, soap, diapers, even a couple of pies and candy for the kids. Enough to last the rest of the month, until the next ration cycle started.
“We can’t pay for this.” the man said.
The woman outside smiled gently and handed him a piece of paper. “Go to this address. Fix the roof.”
She turned away and was gone.
