A quote: “There is hardly a pioneer’s hut which does not contain a few odd volumes of Shakespeare. I remember reading the feudal drama of Henry V for the first time in a log cabin.” ~~ Alexis de Tocqueville

A shadow at the door. She hadn’t even heard him approach but oh, the way they looked at each other and came together and it was like time began again. His packs were full but he stopped first to gift her his surprise. Something from the ruined cities long deemed dangerous.

A book.

“Bless your heart, you found it! The book of fairy tales my grandmother, your great-great grandmother used to read to us. Now I can finally learn how that one about the prince and princess turned out!”
“It’s a fairy tale. They all lived happily ever after.”
“Yes, but it’s how they get to happily ever after that is important.”
“Well, happily ever after for the prince and the princess . . . but maybe not so much for us. To err is human, but to forgive has never been a policy of the IRS or the library on overdue fines.”
