A quote: “Children are the anchors that hold a mother to life.” ~~ Sophocles

I’ll start with a story …

*******************************

Thing is, I don’t remember what set me off to drop out of college and, cliché that it is, wander the world to seek my fortune. A phone call here, a letter there was all I did to keep in touch with my widowed mother.

A call from my sister and I book a flight home. Home to a tiny, fragile woman in a hospital bed set up in her dining room, my sister standing at her head.

Mom touches my face, her eyes clear and joyful and not one hint of reproach of her prodigal son.

I am saved.

*******************************

Now, it is your turn.

Now where is that child? I told him his father needed him to help fix the tractor. And it’s past dinnertime. Is he hiding out in the wheat field again? He’s such a good boy, but I’m tired of his little jokes.

“Clark! Come in, it’s time for dinner! Clark!”

    “Up here, Mom.”

“Oh, you scamp! Come down here! Clark Kent, you’ll give me a heart attack! Now fly back the the barn and tell your father it’s time for dinner.”

The little boy charged merrily around the field. He was as bright as he was adventurous, healthy, inquisitive, and energetic, but above all, even though he was too young to contemplate it or articulate it to himself, obliviously joyous in the knowledge that he was well loved and cared for.

The old man watched and smiled. Ah, for such moments of simple joy. He thought of his cares and worries as a parent and how they had briefly faded for a few such moments as his own children grew. This was his grandson. His son had chosen his bride wisely.
